Satire on Unemployment

Unemployment is currently one of the nation's most pressing problems with everyone from the president to the man on the street crying out about the issue. But almost everyone is concentrating on the issue of unemployment as a negative and how best to decrease the numbers of unemployed Americans. However, despite the stigma attached to being unemployed, unemployment can actually be the best time in a person's life. If a person can endure the shame and loss of dignity that accompanies it, the benefits to being unemployed are many and the costs are insignificant.

First comes the day when one becomes unemployed, it can be one of the most exciting days in a person's life, up there with getting married and having a child, because it is one of the days that a person's entire life changes. If lucky, a person may have half a dozen life changing events in their life, becoming unemployed can be one of them. But better than the excitement that comes from finding out that your entire life has suddenly changed without warning or your consent, is the reaction you will get when you inform your friends and family.

Pity is something that is not appreciated much in society, but it can have its positive effects. One of the benefits of receiving people's pity is the fact that they no longer expect anything from you, instead they are the ones who are expected to give to you. Because you no longer have an income, friends and family may offer to pay for your drinks and meals, you are excused from giving gifts at birthdays and other such events, and a person can truly discover who their friends are at such a time. Enjoying the benefits of being the object of pity may seem to be something shameful, but his too can work to one's advantage. There is a certain amount of dignity one can earn by facing the disgrace with composure, a loser can sometimes become a winner by continuing to lose.

While many Americans admire the "free-spirit" character, not many can actually live the life. Being unemployed allows a person to be a free-spirit, living from day-to-day, not knowing where your next meal will come from. This also allows a person to get rid of those pesky plans for the future; going on vacation, purchasing a home, paying for the children's college, and other such worrisome things. There really is no future when one is unemployed, one must constantly live in the here and now and disregard thinking of planning for the future. What a relief.

One of the great benefits that one receives when losing their livelihood is the ability to enter onto the state's dole and receive government benefits. Depending on the state in which a person lives, filing a claim for unemployment benefits can be easy and simply. As is commonly known, the government does its best to make the process of applying for and receiving benefits as easy and uncomplicated as possible. The wording of the forms, many of which can easily be found on the state's webpage, are always done in easy to understand "government speak," which has been developed over decades to ensure that the ordinary American can easily comprehend government communications.

But best of all is the free money that the government gives a person who has lost their job. It may be only a fraction of what the person was earning, but that only forces a person to become more inventive in the way they live. In the modern world, everyone needs to be less wasteful and more efficient, living on unemployment can teach a person to do just that. People don't really need to eat three times a day when two will suffice for survival. And it is good to learn frugality in one's life by not wasting resources on unnecessary luxuries like toothpaste, soap, or even toilet paper. There is plenty of junk mail out there that needs a purpose, unemployment can force a person to be inventive with their solutions.
