General and specific MIS Concerns

General Information System Security and Management Principles

Generally, modern business organizations must establish and maintain comprehensive plans and processes to guarantee that business can be continued or restored after being adversely affected by emergencies. Effective business continuity planning enables the quick restoration of business operations by systematically identifying critical systems and business processes and determining (in advance) specific action plans for handling mission-critical functions until it systems are restored. Those action plans must be continually tested, evaluated, updated, and refined and they must include plans to address loss of facilities, personnel, and critical systems. To achieve that goal, it management and security systems must be coordinated with disaster recovery plans in conjunction with teams that include business managers and it specialists working together to create a business impact analysis and corresponding responses, procedures, and protocols to mitigate the impact and effects of any potential threats to the organization.

Specific Information System Security and Management Concerns

Power Outages

The industrial nature of the business of Dirt Bikes USA means that the cost of establishing emergency power generation capabilities sufficient to maintain ordinary business processes (i.e. product manufacturing) would be considerably more expensive than establishing sufficient emergency power generation to run it systems and administrative functions but not actual business manufacturing processes. Therefore, it is recommended that the organization invest in generators capable of independently delivering at least several hours of electric power for the purposes of backing up and copying essential it data and systems after a sudden loss of power. It is not recommended that the organization invest in power generation capabilities sufficient to run industrial machinery because of the prohibitive cost of doing so and the non-critical nature of the organization's products and services.

Vandalism

Vandalism is a major concern because of the nature of the products manufactured by the organization and the high rate of theft generally associated with motor vehicles and motorcycles. It is recommended that the organization conduct a thorough perimeter and site security audit for the purposes of ensuring the maximum mitigation of any risks of vandalism and theft. To the extent that internal vandalism is a concern, it is recommended that the organization invest in security cameras to monitor critical areas. Additionally, employee physical access to specific areas on the grounds of the company should be restricted appropriately based on responsibilities. Likewise, it is recommended that different degrees of it system access be assigned to employees on the basis of need instead of allowing universal system access to all authorized it system users.
