The research article critiqued within this document is Hockaday’s “Trauma leadership strategies to prevent and reduce burnout in urban academic centers”. This piece of literature deconstructs several eminent facets of burnout syndrome within the context of the healthcare industry and its manifestations among various forms of trauma care providers. Specifically, the author examines this phenomenon in relation to nurses, surgeons, residents, and advanced practice providers. The article concludes with a number of interventions directed towards the individual and organizational levels.

The most pivotal point the author makes is that burnout syndrome produces an inordinately noxious affect upon those who are susceptible to its symptoms. Moreover, she indicates that those working with trauma patients are at particular risk for this phenomenon. Perhaps the overarching goal of this article is to elucidate the role of leadership in identifying and mitigating the instance of this condition. The author explicates that achieving this objective is one of the goals of leadership.

Burnout syndrome is detrimental occurrence which has the potential to affect all professionals in whatever line of work in which they are engaged. I firmly agree with the author that those in leadership positions are tasked with preventing the effects of this occurrence. I also agree with the author regarding what is at stake in doing so. Leaders must succeed in this endeavor to maintain successful organizations and sustain the employees which are required for them.
