Motivational Letter: Creative Sustainability at Aalto University

The Master's Degree Programme in Creative Sustainability at Aalto University is one of the most unique programs in the world in the rapidly-developing field of sustainable commerce. Today, it is rare to find a major company that does not have a section of its website devoted to sustainability. Sustainability is a popular 'buzzword' in the business press. Yet sustainability is not merely something that is fashionable: it must become the core of how businesses develop their standard operating procedure and approach the environment.

The Creative Sustainability Programme attracts me because of its recognition that sustainability is more than recycling or fair trade: it is reworking the entire focus of a company to take an environmentally-friendly view of the future and rethink what it means to be efficient and productive. The programme's merging of architecture, various features of design, construction, business operations, landscaping, and urban planning reflects this notion of sustainability as complex and multifaceted in nature. All aspects of production must be addressed in conjunction.

I am currently the VP of Basahel Geoconsul, a geo-consulting company based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The company offers experienced consulting in advanced geological methods, mining and engineering. The company addresses the needs of a wide variety of clients from both private industry and government; for-profit and non-profit entities alike. Recent clients include the Saudi Geological Survey; the Deputy Ministry for Mineral Resources; Kinan International Realestate Development; Ewaan Global Residential Company; and Al-Obikan Group Realestate .

To give such advice with awareness of the need for sustainability is critical, which is why my work demands the formal training provided by the CS programme. Although I hold a bachelor's in business administration and have an academic background in accounting, finance, and organizational development, I require further study and specialization to link my work to the burgeoning 'green' industry. I am well aware of the fact that in the future clients will need to be more concerned about environmental regulation; the science of balancing the needs of the earth with their own financial needs; and increased pressures from a variety of stakeholders to rethink the relationship of commerce to the earth.
