Motivation: Relatedness using Jigsaw Technique
In this paper, we are going to discuss the motivational issue which is faced by schools and for an ideal school these issues are to be resolved. In this paper we will present an ideal school plan in which a perfect plan will be implemented. Reasons for the low motivation will also be discussed. Motivational plans will be explained for the teachers to student motivation, peer-to-peer motivation, and parent to student motivation. This paper will describe some technique for the increase of motivation in students. In this paper some techniques for the development of students' relatedness will also be discussed.
Motivation
Inspiration or motivation is a theoretical build used to describe the start, route, intensity, determination, and excellence of actions, especially goal-directed behavior.
Motives are usually considered as relatively common needs or wishes that energize people to start filling with meaning activity series. In comparison, objectives (and relevant strategies) are generally more particular and to be used to describe the route and quality of the activity series in particular situations (Alderman, 1999).
Student motivation is used to describe the level to which learners spend attention and effort in various activities, which may or may not be the ones preferred by their instructors. Students are being motivated by their teachers, parents, peers and other related bodies to achieve their goals. Goals may be social goals, cognitive goals, affective goals, subjective organizational goals, social relationship goals and task goals (Brophy, 2004).
Relatedness
Social relatedness refers to the need to identify near, constant, caring, and safety relationships, focuses on emotional needs and the development of inspiration throughout the life span. It is a type of relation in which people become dependent on each other (Deci, 2000).
Relatedness refers to the need for social affiliation with others; it is related to the emotional attachment with others. It is the fulfillment of psychological needs of a person. With respect to students in an institution relatedness means the affection relationship of students with other students, teachers and with the other members related to them (E, 2010).
Issues statement
Issues which most of the school faced by the schools are as follows
In every school there are a variety of students; teachers need to understand the psyche of every student and his capabilities.
Negative impact on students due to ineffective motivation of teacher.
Most of the times there are more average students in a class then above average, teachers need to motivate their students how are with low motivation level.
Student sometime be motivated by the environment of home or due to the gaps between the child and parents.
In schools students from different cultures, races, religion is studying so sense of relatedness is below than average.
Student's disputes with other students develop negative thoughts and become the motivated.
Teachers to student motivation
Teachers are the best motivator for the student; it is the teachers who make their students eligible to perform every activity of their life. As instructors one of our many obligations is to advertise and enhance self-motivation within our learners. Our training, training techniques, and educational setting atmosphere should motivate inspiration amongst our learners to interact with them in a desire for constant learning. Motivating inspiration within the educational setting has many benefits for both the learners as well as the instructor (Spring, 2010).
Teachers need to make judgments of their work towards their students as they are providing effective education to their students.
Teachers to give with more careful and genuine responses and primary structure of the objectives and recommendations, learners often review that they experience motivated and are better able to form their term.
Teachers should make a variation in their teaching style, provide them with the best options about their coursework, about other activities, provide them with the best course work and also assign those challenging tasks, and provide them with the deeper knowledge. The behavior of the teacher should be enthusiastic; teachers should create a healthy competitive environment and shouldn't create a jealous environment. Teachers should success of the students and also communicate it with the students. Teachers must remove communication gap and create a communication channel. They must give a timely and constructive response to the students. Teachers should communicate evaluating criteria with students and should evaluate on fair basis. Teachers shouldn't do favoritism towards any student it will motivate other students (Callahan, 2008).
Two basic techniques for assisting and growing inspiration in the educational setting are (1) creating an educational setting framework and institutional method that provides the surroundings for optimal inspiration, involvement, and learning; and (2) helping the students to create resources that will allow him or her to be self-regulated.
Incentives, rewards, scholarships and financial awards may motivate the students for the achievement. Gifts and rewards may be attached to the time; students will be motivated to perform timely assignments.
Experiments, practical work and other practical application of knowledge must be included in class activities. It will make the active involvement of the students and will enhance the skills, attitudes, behavioral skills, and practical knowledge.
Encouraging statements and praises also increase the motivation level of students. Praise for the creativity and endeavor work done will improve and encourage the students in a positive way. It will increase the confidence level of the students and booster them for the harder tasks. It will encourage the students and motivate them.
Motivational seminars, success stories when shared with the students it will boost up the motivation level of the students. Teachers must arrange seminars, must share success stories with the students of different successful persons.
Teachers should use such techniques which will enhance the lectures and don't create boredom among the students, lectures must be delivered by involving students, multimedia, projectors, videos, and discussions must be done during lectures.
Peer to Peer motivation
Student to student motivation is an important aspect of student's educational success. "The main station for relatedness is social interaction. A feeling of relatedness among students may operate as an inspirational resource when kids have to face task or complications. In times of stress, kids who experience reliable others as "backing them up" react with more vitality, versatility, and beneficial activities.
Group activities (collaboration), relatedness and group motivation
Collaboration is the "mutual involvement of members in a synchronized attempt to fix a problem together." Collaborative communications are recognized by distributing objectives, balance of structure, and a higher level of settlement, interaction, and interdependence. Group activities are particularly valuable for improving undergraduate studying. Nonresponsive feedback, on the other hand, can be detrimental to undergraduates studying in collaborative situations. Collaboration can have highly effective results for undergraduate studying, particularly for low achieving learners. These results are seen in the form of higher ratings on work finished collaboratively, even when learners turn into individual products. Group activities are connected to a number of important academic results, such as crucial thinking, Meta cognition, and inspiration. Collaborative learning components are suggested to encourage development of crucial considering, to the level that they activate intellectual issue and disequilibrium. (M, 1994)
Learners who were in classes with a lot of supportive studying were psychologically better than students who were not. They had greater self-esteem. Learners In cooperative studying sessions have more good emotions about themselves than do students in traditional classes. Team perform is a necessary element because it is indicative of how developments are being created in business, technology, knowledge, etc. If our students do not know how to perform in categories, and how to function as a group participant, we have effectively ready them for upcoming not performed circumstances.(E, 2010)
Parent to student motivation
Parents always want the best for their kids and always want their kid to stay a better life than they did. Mother and father offer as many sources as they can, but this can also be adverse to the kid's knowledge. Mother and father generally do not become engaged in preparation unless problems occur, which then can cause to disappointment from the mother and father because the kid is not doing well. This disappointment can be considered by the kid due to the topic, which consequently brings the kid to design the actions and not understand the content (M, 1994).
Parents who listen to that teacher created the attempt to know their learners as people feel more relaxed supporting their plan. Provide students one-on-one help.
Parents can motivate students by having regular motivational and friendly conversations; parents should set some goals for their children and communicate them with their child. Parents must create a supporting environment for the child. Parents should spend a quality time with their child (Ryan, 2009).
Higher engagement of parents in studies of child shoe high performance of students, high motivational level, higher level of achievements, higher graduation rates and low rates of school dropping. Parent engagement towards the child increase self-efficacy of student and increase academic interest and motivation and also they become positive learners (O'Donnell, Reeve, & Smith, 2009).
A parent can provide many of these valuable, extrinsic aspects, but one essential aspect is the perspective and the way in which the inspiration is given/received. Mainly, an actual self-efficacy must always be existing because if a kid considers she can do well, then she wills (Alderman, 1999).
Extrinsic motivation causes students to identify more objectives as unachievable, whereas and intrinsic motivated kid will see very few objectives as unachievable because that undergraduate considers that anything is possible with effort. This is where parental involvement becomes decisive (Aronson, 2012). The most difficult element of assisting a kid is having the tolerance to allow development. Informing a kid the response helps them finish the task, but seriously reduces their knowing.
The educational psychology theory explains that the parents must observe the psychology of the kid and then motivate according to his mindset. Intrinsic motivated kids don't need to be motivated they are to be appreciated and rewarded to increase the level of motivation also they have to tell with the success stories of others. Extrinsic motivation kid need to be rewarded, needs to be punished and needs to be controlled by actions (Callahan, 2008).
Jigsaw activities
This action is particularly best of circumstances in which learners require practice with content that is easily separated into component parts. Categories are allocated a specific element or element of the idea into concern (work with different tasks to be performed, tasks categorized for performance in a group) and each team participant is predicted to become an 'expert' on that element. The categories are then reshuffled to consist of one participant from each of the past groups in one new team, and each professional is accountable for 'teaching' their particular specialty to the other team associates (Brophy, 2004).
The Jigsaw Technique is an excellent way to learn the course content in a supportive learning style. The jigsaw process motivates hearing, involvement, and concern by providing each member of the team an important part to play in the educational activity. Group associates must work together as an organization to achieve a typical goal; each person relies on all the others (Seneca, 2011).
Self-determination theory
It is involved with assisting our natural or intrinsic motivation, something in effective and healthy and balanced ways. Self-determination concept (SDT) is a macro-theory of human inspiration, character growth, and well-being. The concept concentrates especially on volitional or self-determined behavior and the social and public circumstances that enhance it. Intrinsic inspiration exists along a procession, with innate motivation on the far right, external motivation in the center and a motivation on the far remaining. Intrinsic motivation is ideal; individuals practice an action because of inner aspects is, therefore likely to maintain the action for their own facts. Extrinsic inspiration is motivated by external forces; it is a less recommended condition than innate inspiration, but better than a-motivation, which is a finish lack of inspiration. The crucial part of the conceptual issues the level to which individuals meet their primary emotional needs; the more they obtain these primary emotional needs, the more their actions is self-determined. Although the development propensities actual intrinsic motivation and internalization are progressed and therefore 'natural', this does not suggest that they operate robustly under all circumstances. Instead these inherent propensities need particular facilitates and nutriments from someone's public atmosphere (Ryan, 2009).
Ideal school plan
The ideal school plan is a school plan in which all the students and teachers are fully motivated and the environment of the school is pleasant and healthy. In a healthy school there is a social relatedness environment among students. There is a close interaction between the teachers and the parents of the students and who tries to motivate students at every stage of life for their well being and to achieve goals. In an ideal school, there is healthy competition among students. Extra Co curricular activities are also arranged for the students. Class environment must be friendly and not discouraging. Teachers must evaluate students on a fair basis. There must be some collaborative activities and jigsaw activities for the students to increase their motivation level and social relatedness among students (Gonzalez-DeHass, Willems, & Doan Holbein, 2005).
For an ideal school teacher must be experienced and also know the psychology of the students and encourage the students to achieve their goal. Wrong work done is better than the work which is not done so students must be encouraged and motivated. Students must be provided with the rewards and some incentives to increase motivation of those students who are extrinsically motivated (Callahan, 2008).
Conclusion
Motivation is the main driver for the achievement of goals. Motivation to the students can increase their efficiency and it can improve their working skills. Motivation can be increased in students by the teachers, parents and other student interaction. For the increase of motivation group activities, jigsaw activities and other self relatedness factors are involved. Motivated students can work better than the de-motivated student. Motivation level is based on the psychological makeup of a student. Some students are internally motivated who must be appreciated and some students are extrinsically motivated who work for the sake of rewards and due to the fear of punishment, these students need o handled with a lot of care and a lot of attention is needed to provide to these students. Group activities and other jigsaw activities can motivate students by the increased interaction with the other students. I also develop understanding among students and increase affection and a sense of relationship and dependency. It also prepares students for the professional field of work.
