¶ … Motivations for Pursuing a Career in Medicine
It is in my opinion that people strive and compensate for what they perceive they do not have: one tries to gain strength to overcome his or her weakness. My motivations for pursuing a career in medicine take root from my experience as a young adult in Yemen, my native country. Being an underdeveloped country, we were literally impoverished and not given the proper and basic social services that people should have, especially the women sector. In a country where female genital mutilation is practiced, I became witness to the harsh realities that women have to go through in their attempt to follow the society's norms and traditions, whether it adversely affects their lives and health or not.
Exposure to the needs of the people, especially those who cannot afford medical services provided for by hospitals in my country, made me realize that if only there are medical doctors who will be willing to offer their services for free or at a minimal amount, then our country's health services problem will be at least alleviated. Thus, I envisioned myself that one day, I will be able to fulfill this dream not only for my personal development, but for my country's people as well. And this dream can be achieved by pursuing a career in medicine.
The road towards accomplishing this goal is not easy. To fulfill my goals, I need to enroll myself in a quality medical school that is known for its academic excellence and has the necessary tools, equipments, and other materials that a medical student could need. This is why my decision to leave my country and study in Canada became imperative, since this sudden decision is, I consider, a step towards fulfilling my dream of becoming a doctor and eventually, to help out in solving the health problems that plague my country at present.
Given my profound experience in the current issues in the fields of health and medicine, I believe that I can become an asset to the program, a productive member of the Irish learning environment. The knowledge I acquired while attending formal school in Canada prepares me for the task of becoming a medical doctor. Furthermore, my awareness and understanding of and exposure to diversity in cultures are advantages that enable me to work with people of all culture, race or ethnic membership, and nationality. This is vital in the current state of human society today, where every composed of not only one, but multiple cultures attributed to the various nationalities and races of people living in each country in the world today.
