M.S. Advanced Architectural Design

Office of Architecture Admissions

To the Admissions Committee.

As the son of an architect, my exposure to artistic forms and cultural designs began at an early age; my decision to become an architect was of course quite natural. The study of Architectural Engineering at Han Yang University in Seoul, South Korea broadened my knowledge on theory and I soon realized that my perspectives were changing. When I began working at my father's architectural firm I quickly decided to become a designer and theorist architect instead of an engineer. This desire soon led me to the Southern California Institute of Architecture, where I successfully completed an Architectural Degree.

When I began my studies at SCI, my knowledge in the field was limited, but as time passed and the course work became increasingly difficult, I thought of quitting, due to feeling that I was not qualified. As a result, I contemplated whether or not to change my career choice, but through much effort I finally completed the courses. After graduating, I became employed at an architectural firm and participated in several projects as chief designer. However, I soon realized what I really wanted to do was create progressive and experimental computer-generated architecture which then led to becoming enrolled in the master of architecture program at the Pratt Institute.

At this institution, I began to realize that the computer could be utilized for long-distance design collaboration, visualizing negative space as a problem -- solving strategy, requirements for code compliance software and a graphic grammar system that generates designs for human

interpretation. When I consider presenting architectural designs with this unique media, especially through digital representation, my enthusiasm increases and inspires me to share the interpretations of architecture and digital media with other professionals. As an architect's tool, the computer supports design metaphors, an important requirement for the digital representation of design knowledge. Thus, it is clear that digital technology provides more opportunities to create architecture while also expanding the diversities of art, science and culture. However, I was confronted with many disappointments while at the Pratt Institute, especially when a certain instructor did not provide the freedom to do experimental architecture. In addition, there were not enough specialized experts in particular areas of study.

I realize that to become a prominent architect, merit alone is not enough motivation for success, so I have decided to continue my studies at Columbia University, knowing that it will not be an easy task to start all over again. At Columbia, I would like to explore as many aspects of design methodology as possible and then undertake a detailed investigation into visual art forms and their impact on diverse digital media. Also, I would like to create new designs that will enhance developing communities around the world.
