One of the major advantages in using standardized tools for the assessment of older adults is that this method can help to identify long-standing learning needs such as reading or mathematic aptitude and help to steward instruction to meet these need. By contrast, a disadvantage is the lack of nuance in such evaluations, which often makes it difficult to recognize individual learning styles from which to build improved aptitude.

I am a wife of fourteen years and a mother of three children and a dog; two boys, one girl and a Boxer. I received my high school diplomas from City College Senior High School in Baltimore, MD and have parlayed my education into a long period of service in the field of nursing. Working in the Baltimore area in various capacities, I have assisted patient needs in clinical, hospital and hospice settings.

To my surprise, I have found that I am a Visual Learner. I completed the VARK Learning Style inventory to identify my own learning style. The results were as follows: Visual: 9, Aural: 9, Read/Write: 16, Kinesthetic: 13, a Visual Learner. According to the accompanying material, the visual learner needs to see all study material, and is a strong reader but sometimes may read too rapidly. Due to my receptive motor memory, after I have completed a task with my hands, I will be able to remember and complete the same task in the future even if it was only done once. When I study for exams I usually have to write the information over and over again, along with picturing it in my mind, and lastly by saying it out loud. Every time I have used this technique, my grades have improved. I took the VARK Questionnaire and the outcome was Multimode, with a high preference towards the Visual Learning Style. There is no denying I am a Visual Learner, much like the majority of the population.

7. Why are listening habits important?

Listening habits are a prime determinant of how well one gleans the important information from a statement, a lecture or a presentation. The refinement of one's listening habits is tantamount to one's ability to take information gained from a lecture and apply it to more complex problem-solving scenarios.

8. What step is a priority for you?

My top priority is to take these steps from careful listening and diligent self-discipline and turn them into critical thinking skills. From the focus and attentiveness that I dedicate to my learning, I expect to strengthen my own abilities for intuitive and insight.
