During our first day in the United States Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC), we were required to travel from our base to the destination. It took 6-7 hours to get to Chicago from Honolulu, Hawaii, which was where I am from. From there, we travelled towards Great Lakes A couple of others and I arrived several hours earlier as compared to the rest of the graduating class, who were said to have arrived later that night. It was the first time I had travelled to another state, and also being so far away from my family really made me nervous. However, I valued this experience since I knew it would be a character building event. The two others who came may have come from the same state as I did, although they were total strangers which didn't help lower my nervousness. Knowing they were from the general area I was from gave me slight comfort, none the less. However, until this day I can't even remember their names or even their faces.
Upon arrival, we were issued all the items that we needed during our training; all except our uniforms. We were instructed to help with issuing of the items once the rest of the recruits had arrived. Among all the items, we were given "essentials" for our stay; these items did not include shampoo because we were going bald for the training as a requirement. The items given to us consisted of underwear (briefs), plain white t-shits - two shirts which we fondly nicked-named "bulls-eyes" because of the round navy symbol on the front - green physical training (PT) shorts, black and white socks, a pair of New Balance running shoes, a loofa, liquid soap, matching blue hoodie and sweat pants that we call Smurfs, a sea bag to hold all of them in, and our ball caps with the word Recruit embroidered on it.
