Nursing: Nurses as Leaders of Healthcare Reform

Priority Health Issue Selected

The priority health issue selected for the research is the managing of allergies and asthma in schoolchildren. School nurses hold a significant place in educating the children and parents, and teachers. This issue is considered important as it would help children maintain their full attendance and not miss important lessons so that their academic performance is not affected negatively (John Snow. Inc., n.a.). Moreover, keeping them healthy and aiding them in better learning should be of top priority for a crucial healthcare role like that of nurses.

Benefits and Challenges of Further Research in the Selected Area

The benefits of researching in this area are numerous such as it would help the children who have asthma to improve school attendance, lessen their nighttime waking, poor management of allergies would be eradicated, and reduction in self-esteem and self-perception of one’s behaviors due to health conditions would be exterminated (McCann et al., 2006). Also, it is beneficial for teachers and school management who have less knowledge about asthma management, which is a critical condition for the students suffering from it.

Challenges for further research in this area would be the distorted communication between the children and the healthcare giver since the awareness about poor techniques of inhaler use and adherence to the self-management strategies on their own would cause troubles. Some studies indicated that licensed nurses could not administer medications inside the school on certain occasions, which would be a challenge (Chandra et al., 2008, p. 45). There could be problems in follow-ups in emotional counseling and screening for chronic conditions to better identify extensive care to certain children.

Overview of the Selected Articles

A research study indicated that appropriate asthma and allergy management is critical for the emotional, physical, and intellectual wellbeing of school children. Nurses are fundamental primary healthcare providers (McCabe et al., 2019). The findings of this study obtained from a systematic literature review emphasized that asthma-focused education is a key player in the improvement in its management among school children, for which school nurses should be confident and competent with possession of the relevant knowledge. The seriousness of asthma should be considered, and for that, modern management techniques and national guidelines should be followed.

The aggravations of allergies in changing weather and sometimes food allergies are difficult to handle independently. They do not know beforehand what food and quantity would react adversely towards their health (Portnoy & Shroba, 2014). Scholarly research revealed that the prevention programs for allergies and asthma management, specifically food allergies, should be known to the nurses for formulating individualized care plans and accurate emergency responses (Carlisle et al., 2010). It was also mentioned that school nurses must have the pertinent training in this area so that staff deployment in the relevant areas and developing guidelines for certain foods and even accompanying on the trips could be managed effectively.
