Add to this the growing costs of the aging baby-boomers and Medicare, and healthcare facilities must struggle to stay afloat. That is why there is so much advertising in healthcare today, it indicates healthcare organizations, from hospitals to pharmaceutical companies are businesses, competing for clients just the way another other business would compete. They hire PR firms, develop ad campaigns and brands, and use common business practices because they are businesses, rather than service organizations (Elliott, 2004).
Finally, a third aspect of the modern healthcare climate indicates the business side of the industry. More and more, healthcare professionals are demanding better working conditions, higher salaries and benefits, and even bonus structures, just as in private industry. Another expert notes, "In order to fill vacant positions, hospitals and other providers are continuously raising salaries, increasing benefits, and offering generous bonuses to be more competitive and to successfully attract qualified caregivers to their facilities" (Shorb, 2006). Fewer professionals enter the field for the love of medicine, and more enter it as they would any other business endeavor, and so healthcare must keep up or be left behind - fiscally and professionally insolvent.
In addition, the cost of technology and medical procedures has skyrocketed, and to remain cutting-edge, hospitals and other healthcare providers must offer the latest and best in treatment and technology options. More consumers are becoming aware of these advances, and are demanding them from their local healthcare providers, which puts additional stress on financial resources (Shorb, 2006).
