Nursing: Writing Topic from Learning Resources

The topic I choose this week as an issue in writing is ‘effective paraphrasing.’ I find this topic an issue since I want to ensure that I do not plagiarize any work taken from previous literature and keep my original wordings to give my writing authenticity. For example, suppose there is a scholarly article on hypertension that says: “Successful prevention and treatment of hypertension are key in reducing disease burden and promoting longevity in the world’s population” (Oparil et al., 2018). In that case, I need to understand that I must read the sentence twice or thrice to extract keywords and concepts and write them in my own words. For example, the same information from the article could be paraphrased as: “Hypertensive patients must know that for enhancing longevity they must find its avoidance and cure as mandatory key factors.”

The writing topics that were discussed in the workshop were helpful to me in this regard since I came to know that thinking of my version of text after reading the text several times and making up my mind about the key phrases, I must contemplate how I should use similar words that should not change the meaning of the entire text. I also learned that keeping the interpretation the same but using different words, such as synonyms or making a passive voice sentence into active voice, are helpful tactics that can be used in effective paraphrasing. Further, breaking lengthy sentences into smaller ones is another helpful trick that I learned in the workshop.
