Nursing Scholarship

I have a burning desire to work with homebound geriatrics and pediatric oncology. The compassion to help people, especially elderly and children, the belief in the ability to achieve these goals, and the unfortunate experience of my daughter losing a classmate/friend after battling cancer for eight long years has led to a deeply, burning desire to obtain nursing licensure and work with these types of people. My goals after obtaining nursing licensure is to work part time with homebound geriatrics and fulfill a commitment made to the mother of my daughter's friend in helping children with cancer in the memory of her daughter.

For the past few years, I have worked as an EMT in an overnight summer camp with 1500 children and 65 staff families. The work I do there involves working close with the Pediatrician that visits the camp four times a week, and treating children with various illness, including diabetes mellitus, allergies, asthma, seizures, pain attacks, and other illnesses. My GPA in school is 3.52 at this point and I received clinical excellence this past semester. Often times, the summer camp parents will call to discuss their own children's medical needs. We have been fortunate that there have been summers with a very minimal amount of medical emergencies. I am looking forward to this year's summer season at the camp and being able to utilize what I have had the privilege of learning in nursing school to help the kids at summer camp. In free time, I volunteer for Hatzola, a volunteer EMS organization. There is enclosed a company letter with further information for viewing. Doing volunteer work is another way to help people. The reward is the feeling inside from the idea of helping someone in need.

My daughter's classmate/friend had battled cancer for eight long years before she died. When her mother asked us at my daughter's graduation to do something in her daughter's memory, it was not hard to decide to work with other children with the same problem because there are so many who are struggling the same way. This is a situation that fills my heart with compassion because I believe I have the ability to work to make a difference in the lives of these children. The feeling that comes from being able to bring a smile to a suffering child's face cannot compare with any amount of money. It is an inward reward that nothing else comes close to comparing with it.
