¶ … Nursing

What are the core concept definitions of each nursing model? Are there commonalities between the models? If so, what are they? What are the differences, if any?

The core concepts of each nursing model is of course care for the patient as well as improvement of nurse.

Evidence-Based nursing for instance tries to better the nurse by placing review and analysis of research material and critical thinking as base.

Jane Watson's model too, calls for greater motivation and vigor in nurse's practice by using a spiritual approach where nurses see patients as per a holistic whole. Neuman (1995) used systems theories in arguing that people are a system that strives for stability whilst the most influential model in the UK based on Roper at al (1990) describes the person as functioning along an independence/dependence continuum throughout his lifespan

At base, all the nursing models have the following commonalities:

A set of beliefs and values;

A statement of the goal the nurse is trying to achieve;

The knowledge and skills the nurse needs to practice

They differentiate, of course, in the approach that they recommend for the nurse. For instance, whilst EBN places the emphasis on research, Watson's see research as less intrinsic to the skill of nursing.

We may also say that all nursing models have the following 4 concepts as their base:

Person -- the patient him/herself

Environment -- the patient's specific surroundings

Health -- the wellness or illness state of the patient

Nursing -- the actual care of the patient (Fawcett, 1995)

each of the models however describes these differently and hence their distinction one from the other.

Identify and discuss the key components of theory analysis, theory synthesis, and theory derivation. Theory analysis refers to analyzing the specific theory, plumbing it in depth and assessing how, if at all one can use it in one's practicum. Theory synthesis involves merging and combining one theory with another so that, for instance, as a nurse recently told me she fuses the counseling Adlerain theory with the quite different more contemporary one of cognitive behavioral theory in order to counsel her nursing patients. The two fill synchronous different gaps.

Theory derivation, on the other hand, means using the theory as a base form which to generate and create insights for the beneficence of one's profession and the improvement of one's work.

What nursing theory or theorist is used in your place of employment (Nursing) or which one should be used? Why?

I think that EBP should be used since nursing should employ all faculties of the person and some individuals are inspired more by intellectual acumen than by the routine menial labors of the practice.

To a greater extent, however, nurses want to ensure that patient is receiving the best quality and credible care. Research studies keep on changing regarding the best practices. Something that may be said to help a patient one day can be found to hurt the patient the next. The nurse, therefore, wants to ensure that she is according patient th best and most credible attention and care. She can best do this by critical and first-hand research of authoritative, current scientific peer-reviewed sources.

Through using EBP, the nurse can also conduct cross-disciplinary discussion with professionals and practitioners involved on all levels with the patient's nursing thereby not only according the nurse greater respect and enhanced creditability but better helping patient.

What is the difference between Theory Guided Practice and Evidence-Based Practice? Give examples that may apply to your nursing setting.
