Occupational Therapy
Not every person is afforded an opportunity to step into the shoes of their chosen prospective field and see how it will feel to do that specific job. I have been given the opportunity to volunteer time at the Forest View Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Here I was able to work with a vast array of personalities, backgrounds, and circumstances. This allowed me a unique opportunity to experience in a small way how it will be to work as an Occupational Therapist with a wide array of clientele. In addition, volunteering in Forest View Rehabilitation and Nursing center not only allowed the unique opportunity to work in an environment akin to those often found in occupational therapy, it also was a quite humbling experience; working with the elderly and experiencing first hand what a miracle Occupational Therapy was for them, it was a truly amazing opportunity and experience. My father had a hip replacement surgery and after he spent about a month in a rehabilitation center. It was amazing how occupational therapy helped him to become independent again. That had a big impact on me; this is when I decided to become an Occupational Therapist, so that I could be the one to help change peoples lives in a positive way through a direct means.
Many facets of my life relate to occupational therapy personally and professionally. I have always wanted to help people improve their way of life. It has been a dream of mine to not only see the positive changes that can occur in the patients' life, but also be a direct component responsible for their improvements. There are some very important characteristics for an individual that wants to be successful in Occupation Therapy; compassion for others and their situations, dedication to consistently staying educated and striving for continued excellence. Commitment to making a positive change in clients lives, being a positive and making a positive impact on the field of occupational therapy. Purpose, knowing why you are helping people, and realizing the true rewards come from seeing a client leave in a better physical and mental state than when they first entered the rehabilitation facility. All of these characteristics I bring to the table; I bring my love for people, my commitment to excellence, and my hunger for continued knowledge and understanding in the field of occupational therapy. Very few fields allow such a hands on approach, and that is what draws me to it the chance to be apart of something amazing, and help people in a plethora of ways. The talents I bring are my ability to learn quickly and apply new knowledge properly. The ability to keep myself motivated as well as an individual that motivate others around me, the determination and drive to make a difference in the field of occupational therapy and in the lives of my clients. I believe that you have to love what you do. You have to be able to give your whole self and I am willing.
