Patriotism and responsibility in military service leadership

Essentially, I have long desired to work as a military officer so that I can serve my country. In many ways, America is the last remaining superpower on the face of the earth. I would like to do all I can for my country so that it is able to retain this status for as long as it possibly can. I have always been proud to be an American. Moreover, I have always taken pride in our military history. There are very few marital encounters in which the U.S. has acknowledged defeat -- Vietnam is probably the only war that the U.S. has not won outright. I would certainly like to do all that is possible to continue that legacy. To that end, I believe the most immediate way that I can go about achieving this goal is to become a military officer so that I can assert some of the skills and attributes that the military is known for imparting in others. For instance, some of these traits include leadership skills, persistence, and the sort of loyalty for which the U.S. -- and its military in particular -- is known for. In this respect, then, becoming a military officer would help to fulfill one of my lifelong ambitions.

There are numerous things that society expects and in some circumstances even demands from me as a military officer. One of these is a sense of patriotism and loyalty to the country that is unparalleled by mere citizens. Another of these is to demonstrate a strong moral character in virtually all situations. Military officers should engage in behavior that is ethical, and society is frankly wearying of articles about military officers and military personnel who engage in unethical behavior. Moreover, society expects for me to be a leader and to take a leadership role in most situations. The military is an excellent place to learn training for leadership, so society would demand that sort of assertiveness and confidence from a military officer. Additionally, society would expect me to have a general cognizance of global events and things that are taking place that affects the country as a whole. This statement should not be interpreted as a need for me to function as the most knowledgeable person in society. Still, if there are any sort of questions pertaining to the state of the country (particularly those related to military affairs) society would expect me to have some degree of insight into the situation.
