CPA Interview
I interviewed John Perez who is a recent graduate of Florida International University. John obtained his CPA designation shortly after graduation in 2009. He currently works for Macy's Inc., in Cincinnati, Ohio as a corporate accountant. He has been working in this capacity for the past 8 months and cites his CPA designation as a catalyst for obtaining his career with Macys.
How has having a CPA certification or consulting with a CPA helped you do your job?
Summary answer: John's job is predicated on trust. This is particularly true in the midst of the economic slowdown and the European debt crisis that has gripped world markets and businesses. John indicated in the interview that the economic uncertainty has many companies worried about the future economics of their respective industries. The CPA certification therefore provides trust within an uncertain world according to John. The certification is a sign of knowledge and prowess particularly in a business environment full of mistrust. John cited the financial crisis of 2008, with the, "Destruction of trust" in the financial community. People are more leery about trusting anyone in the financial field, John explained. As such, it is important for those still with jobs to have a certification and a distinction that is recognized and trusted throughout the world. CPA has helped John to better do his job as clients are more trusting and therefore more receptive to ideas. These ideas ultimately generate strong personal relationship which further revenues and profits. John also pointed out the financial benefits of obtaining a CPA. He sites that it is common practice for those with the CPA designation to make 3 to 10% more than those without one.
Has having a CPA helped you to obtain a job or have you thought about obtaining a CPA to enhance your skill set?
John explained that the CPA designation helps with both aspects. Employers think highly of the CPA designation as it is a display of accounting knowledge and prowess. Those with a CPA have a definite advantage, in accounting terms, than those without. John also explains that the CPA designation provides insights into the individual's intangible skillsets such as dedication, passion for the accounting industry, and hard work. All aspects are needed to be successful in the field. The CPA also enhances John's skillset as those with the designation are required to take continuous learning courses. These courses can vary depending on the individuals specific professional needs. For example, John last year attended an accounting conference for his firm that was counting towards continuous learning credits to retain his designation. This CPA requirement to continuously learn new skills and abilities in regards to the accounting profession makes the designation ideal for those looking to enhance their respective skillset. John obtained the CPA primarily to better compete with other talent. However, once he acquired his current position he now uses the CPA designation to enhance his skillset.
