Online Job Search

When I began my search, I narrowed my choices to jobs in the arena of sports media. Although I am interested in a number of different roles in the world of sports, the media combines several of my top skills including communications. First I looked at the Web site Sports Career Finder.com, subtitled "Your Gateway to Jobs in Sport." Although I found useful information about sports careers, I could not find exactly what I was looking for and therefore I searched elsewhere. When I loaded JobsInSports.com, I was pleased to find that one of the first jobs listed under the sports marketing section turned out to be a media-centric position. I was just browsing the marketing section when I found a position entitled "Production Manager." This job sounds perfect for me, because it involves a high degree of creativity, knowledge of technology, and also travel. The production manager answers to the Director of Broadcasting, making it an ideal gateway into the sports media world.

2. The first thing I learned about job searching is that I need to patience. I had to search through many different categories of job, even just within the sports field, before finding my ideal position. Second, I learned that I cannot narrow my search too much. When I was restricting my search only to jobs in "media" I did not find many positions that interested me. However, when I also searched through the marketing positions, I noticed unique jobs that were suitable for my talents. It pays to research all the available positions even just to see what is out there. Third, I learned that some job descriptions are written better than others. I prefer the job descriptions that offer a lot of detail including the working conditions. This helps me narrow down which positions are suitable for me and which are not. Finally, I learned that not all positions are equally as demanding on applicants for having prior experience. It pays to read all the job descriptions and not be scared off by a title that sounds intimidating.

3. I will search as many job-related Web sites as possible, taking my time and being patient. I will not give up if the first Web site does not present me with my dream job. I will read carefully through the job descriptions on the Web sites, because if I skim too fast I might overlook positions that would be ideal for me. I will maximize my search time by bookmarking positions I am interested in, coming back to those later.

I will search for jobs in many different categories. I will not restrict myself to certain job categories, because the employer might list a position in a category that I normally would not have chosen. I will think long and hard about how my talents can be maximized in a position, taking into account working conditions and whether or not communications skills are required. I will stretch my limits and I will think creatively about how I would like to approach my career. Some jobs may be stepping stones to a future with a desirable company.
