In this paper, open heart surgery will be discussed for Cabarrus Memorial Hospital in terms of the cost of the program for the hospital and the patients. The advantages and disadvantages of the program will also be discussed. Alternatives will be given in this paper so that all sides can be argued for and against open heart surgery at Cabarrus.
Compliance with Hospital's Mission
The original mission of CMH was to provide care for a specific area in North Carolina that was defined by their original charter and what changes have been made to their original certificate of need since then. As of right now, the hospital is able to send the cases that would be taken care of with the increased capacity to Duke University Medical Center. Apparently this arrangement has worked in the past and patients have not suffered because of it. However, there is a stated need which could be fulfilled by the hospital and free some beds for Duke. Although this is not in compliance with the original mission of the hospital, that could also be altered to include the new facility.
It also seems that this change is being suggested because of the hospital and area relationship with Dr. Christy. Apparently he is a much sought after surgeon who is from the area and desires to return after completing the required residency. Since one goal of the hospital is to serve the members of the community to the best of its ability and Dr. Christy is well respected and trusted by the community, it may seem to be in the best interests of the hospital to go through with this expensive change which may alienate other care centers to accommodate Dr. Christy and members of the community served by CMH.
So, the program complies with the mission of the hospital in that this expansion would benefit the people of the community. However, since
