Opportunity, I Would Demand UN\'s Immediate Attention

Last reviewed: March 9, 2013 ~4 min read

¶ … opportunity, I would demand UN's immediate attention to the education of children in crisis zones (Duncan, W. Raymond, 2008). I would endorse an urgent call for the UN secretary General's action to make sure that vulnerable youth and children across the world obtain quality education by ensuring that:

Schools are protected from attacks

Ensuring that there is a significant increase in humanitarian support towards education

Incorporating emergencies in the budgets before they happen

I would urge the secretary general to take immediate action regarding the 30 million kids residing in nations that are scarred by conflict and violence. This would include millions of children who have been struck by humanitarian crisis such as earthquakes, flood shortages, flooding and other disasters. I would support the UN secretary general's initiative of education which incorporates measures of ensuring the right to education to all kids including all kids living in crisis zones. I would assist the secretary general to determine ways of providing education to kids in conflict-affiliated areas and ensure the schools are protected. If the UN secretary general does not do this, he will not accomplish the millennium education goal and the most vulnerable children will be left in the world without opportunities and hopes (Yearbook of the United Nations -- 2003, 2005).

Children in humanitarian emergencies and conflict areas can no longer wait for education. The UN secretary general must work to ensure that the most vulnerable and the poorest children can access same opportunities other children own. Further, the secretary general must seek to establish an increased humanitarian support to education to ensure the children have the right to education regardless of the borders (Duncan, W. Raymond, 2008). I would urge the secretary general to have strong commitments towards the following:

Supporting the initiatives on education, this entails measures of helping children in crisis zones and other emergencies.

Strengthening national budgets and plans for emergencies

Enforcing global laws that protect schools, teachers and children form attacks

Increasing the percentage of humanitarian support to education

Education lifts people from poverty and promotes equality. It enables children to learn how they can become good citizens. Education is not meant for the few privileged, it is meant for everyone. Education is vital human rights. I would recommend that the secretary general make a resolution on the right to education for children in emergency areas. The resolution must emphasize on the obligation of securing education for children in different contexts. There is only one opportunity the mind of a child to develop. If a boy or girl losses education via conflict, the child would have been deprived his/her birth right and the next generation will be denied the opportunity to recover and develop. The entire society will have been robbed the opportunity to a better future. The secretary general should not allow this to happen because it is not acceptable to anyone. He should ensure that humanitarian efforts are adequate in all areas. All children, as well as education must be protected. Through actions of the UN secretary general, he will be able to protect the common future of the society (Duncan, W. Raymond, 2008).
