Oral Communication Courage Is Resistance Term Paper

I contend that the following things I have learned, in addition, to those previously pointed out (and even more) stem from the thought I frequently tell clients I work with: "What you learn today will make a BIG difference in your life." I have also learned what Parvis (Ibid.) stresses: "One of the best tools in mastering communication is listening." I listen as listening, I contend, constitutes a vital component of oral communication in human services. In interviewing, oral communication can be used to convey what is needed to help insure Client receives needed help. In group interactions, it can convince participants that what other people have to say also needs to be considered. In non-personal contact, oral communication can convey concerns, negative and positive, and challenge Client to consider his/her choices. Active listening involves insuring body language conveys the fact that the person speaking is being heard. An active listener asks appropriate questions and mirrors back what is being said. If the listener does not understand something the speaker conveys, an active listener will ask for clarification.

The closing statement in an oral presentation is not only important, it is vital, like a person's signature on the dotted line. It conveys closure of the presentation, while at the same time recounts a synopsis of what has been said to help insure the audience "gets it."

In a sense, the closing statement stresses the main point of oral communication; what I have learned to do and plan to continue to do daily: Listen to learn......

...

Learn. To listen.
The worries and fears I faced when I first started making oral presentations no longer taunt me. I know now what I learned through the process of confronting my fears as a challenge, studying to learn proper, persuasive techniques and practicing to insure my presentations would make the points they needed to make.

The following "slides" are extracted from PowerPoint presentations I regularly present to clients:
