Orange New Black Piper Kerman's experiences reflect the readings about female penitentiaries. For example, she describes the building as being "heavily fortified…with a vicious-looking, razor-wire fence around it." This is in spite of the fact that it was a minimum security establishment. One's background in many ways determines how one fits into the different cliques that emerge, and also has a bearing on how one spends time in prison. Piper discusses a very important point related to this, which is that assignment to prison jobs is arbitrary. Although she was highly educated, they did not assign her to the GED teaching role and instead randomly assigned her to be an electrician in spite of having no background in this area. Thus, the prison system is not designed to actually help rehabilitate people.

It is designed to demoralize and control people. Part Two Piper's experiences are extraordinary, and she has a lot to teach others. Her story blasts stereotypes about women in prison, for one. As someone who went to Smith College, Piper is the exception to the rule but still proves that prison demographics are more diverse than people think. The story also reveals the problems with the war on drugs, as her term was served due to smuggling and she never hurt anyone.

Non-violent offenses do not need to be treated with prison time, as there are other options available in the judicial and corrections institutions. Prisons are unpleasant places, and designed to be so. However, the American system focuses too much on the punitive function of prisons and has neglected the rehabilitative needs of inmates. This does a disservice to the entire culture and community, as the inmates have a hard time re-entering their communities and finding work when they are released. Piper is lucky; many are not.
