Engineering at an international hotel: Challenges for management

Engineering at an international hotel is could be described as the '7-11' of operations management, in terms of the hours employees must work. Unlike an office building, hotels are always operating at near-full capacity regarding their heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting. Guests may be coming in at odd hours from flights; the night desk clerks must welcome guests and handle the needs of late-night revelers, and the hotel laundry is often washing guests' sheets well before dawn. "Without minimizing the contribution of other departments, of which there may be as many as ten or more, the bottom line is if there is no engineering department there is no hotel. Take away those services like hot water or elevators, heating or cooling, electricity, kitchen equipment, laundry equipment etc., you simply would have no customers" (Corrigan 2011).

The hotel's engineering processes must be designed so the building is operating as efficiently as possible, given this constant strain upon its resources Staffing must be adequate so regular checks and professional maintenance of activities can be conducted. Cost-cutting in the short-term can lead to added expenses in the long-term. For smaller hotels, hiring generalists who can serve in a variety of capacities or using seasonal staff will save on labor costs. Regular maintenance audits to optimize the use of the organization's resources are essential given the substantial cost outlays and loss of customer revenue if there are any unexpected system failures.

Key management competencies

The key management competencies deployed are those of planning (in terms of planning for likely use patterns of the facilities and possible disruptions of service) and controlling (controlling costs and controlling the organizational outlays and procedures). A good manager must have basic knowledge of the requirements of the hotel to be able to determine what type of staff is needed to optimalize its functioning. A manager must be able to select dedicated and technically qualified people and be able to interpret efficiency analyses of the hotel to target needed areas of improvement. An engineering manager does not necessarily have to be an engineer, but he or she must have a basic understanding of engineering to be able to allocate resources effectively, both human and organizational. He or she must also possess the basic capabilities to motivate people, using a combination of external and internal reward systems, as in the case of managing all units. This requires interpersonal as well as technical intelligence.
