My parents' influence on my personal and academic development

¶ … parents have been the most influential people in my life. They are my inspiration. Coming from Cuba, they did not speak any English when they first arrived, however, they not only found employment, but went to school at night in order to build a better life. My mother is now a pediatrician and my father an accountant. My parents have worked very had to ensure that the family prospered.

Although my parents encouraged me to learn and accept American culture, they made certain that I did not forget my Hispanic roots. I was born in the United States, yet I did not speak English until I started kindergarten, only Spanish was spoken at home. Because of that I was often aware that I was different from my friends. However, by the time I reached high school, I understood that although we may all look different, we should treat each other with respect.

My parents taught me discipline, organization, and most importantly perseverance. I have learned to work hard, to never give up, and to follow my dreams. Although I have a mild case of attention deficit disorder, I have never allowed it to interfere with my goals, after all if my parents did it in a foreign country without speaking the language, then I could do it. My parents also instilled in me a love for science and reading, and have proven to be the best examples in the world. Our favorite family activity is to watch the game show "Jeopardy" together. We challenge each other to see who can answer the most correct questions, and whoever wins gets to choose the restaurant the family will eat at that weekend. And if I win, I am even allowed to invite friends to join us.
