Social Media: Privacy and Free Speech Although social media has its conveniences, there are definitely some scenarios whereby one may find it difficult to engage their intended audience. This is more so the case in those instances where the message being passed on is confidential. While there are questions I would have no problem posting on an organization's social media platform, there are definitely some queries I would prefer to have addressed via the traditional mediums like emails or phone calls. Such queries would most definitely be of a private nature. One of the key weaknesses of social media systems is their lack of privacy. Messages sent could be viewed by thousands of people and circulated widely within a matter of minutes. This is unlike is the case with an email message whose only viewers are the sender and the recipient. With social media communications, 'Big Brother' is always watching. The web has some viral capabilities that cannot be matched by traditional communication systems. One minute you are posting about how amazing the 4K TV you just purchased is; the next some tech savvy burglar breaks into your home to steal the same after having...

In that regard, therefore, I would definitely feel uncomfortable putting some questions or concerns on social media platforms to have them addressed.

After Anthony Elonis was left by his wife, he took to the social media threatening his wife and generally posting offensive messages about the mother of his children. One of the messages he posted was; "there's one way to love ya but a thousand to kill ya. I'm not gonna rest until your body is a mess, soaked in blood and dying from all the little cuts ... " (Mazie, 2015, p. 35). He was promptly sent to prison for posting communication containing threats. One of the key tenets of democracy -- a term that is more relevant today than it was a decade ago -- is free speech. Free speech, as a matter of fact, is part of the First Amendment.
