Diabetes Patient Teaching Plan
Patient and Family Teaching Plan
The teaching plan has an overall goal of increasing the knowledge of the patient on diabetes in order for them to be able to better take care of him or herself and improve their quality of life. It will also help the patient to be able to take the necessary steps to improve their health.
Client learning objectives
Be well versed with the basic facts surrounding diabetes
This involves teaching the client that diabetes is caused by improper insulin levels. There is type I and type II diabetes. Type I diabetes is insulin-dependent diabetes and is caused by low insulin levels. In type II diabetes, it is non-insulin dependent and the levels of insulin are not low at all times. They can also be higher than normal Rodriguez et al., 2005()
Know the risk factors
There are many risk factors that exist for diabetes. The client needs to know these risk factors of diabetes. One is genetics and family background since diabetes is a hereditary disease. Second are diseases that damage the pancreas which inhibit production of insulin. The third risk factor is obesity therefore the patient needs to watch their weight Rodriguez et al., 2005()
3. Understand the value of diet in diabetic patients
The client needs to understand that diet is very important in diabetes patients. Studies that have been conducted recently have shown that the glucose levels in the blood usually improve when the patient starts losing weight. Therefore, diabetics need to watch their diet in order to avoid gaining weight unnecessarily Rodriguez et al., 2005()
4. Understand the need for exercise
Since losing weight helps the body to generally regulate its own blood glucose levels, exercise does help a lot to lose weight Rodriguez et al., 2005()
5. Understand the role of drug therapy
The client needs to understand that diabetes must be controlled using drugs which help to regulate the blood sugar levels and to stimulate the pancreas to secrete more insulin. Generally, these drugs must be matched with dieting and exercise in order to lose weight appropriately. The hypoglycemic drugs are first and second generation sulfonylureas. These drugs help to control blood glucose levels and have fewer side effects and are not likely to interact of be contraindicated with other medication Kasper & Giovannucci, 2006()
6. To be able monitor the disease on their own
It is crucial for the client to be able to track their condition. Therefore, they must be trained on how to monitor their blood glucose levels to be able to discover potential problems quite early Kasper & Giovannucci, 2006()
Teaching method
This teaching plan will be carried out through the issuance of brochures to the patient to teach them on the topic. They will also have scheduled visual aid lessons to help them to understand the various aspects of the disease. It will also be taught using demonstrations and role playing in order to lighten up the teaching session.
