Drama Poetry

How is the more direct performative aspect of drama and/or poetry reflected in these forms? (Consider for example, each genre's uses of literary structure, language, technique, and style.)

In Rupert Goold's Macbeth, the language and literary structure are following the same lines from the Shakespearian play. Yet, the way the characters are speaking and performing their roles helps the individual to understand the setting and background of what is occurring. This technique and style is used to provide a better comprehension of the key ideas and to help everyone directly relate to the events that are unfolding. Once this takes place, is the point the audience is connecting with the themes from the original play and the different events that are occurring. This makes it more entertaining and allows them to apply these images, scenes and words with their own lives. ("Macbeth," 2013)

These ideas are different from the kind of experience that someone will have from reading a poem. For example, in Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken, the reader is forced to interpret what is happening in their own mind. This is because they are not seeing or hearing these lines spoken to them. Instead, they have to carefully think about what is unfolding and the lasting impact it is having on everyone. This is despite the fact that the literary structure is following a similar rhythm as Macbeth. While the language, is more modern and the techniques / style are slightly different. For the reader, they will have to use their own imagination and experiences to understand what is unfolding and how this is influencing them. (Frost, 1920)

How do these literary elements affect your reading experience?

The way these literary elements affect the reading experience, is to create a situation where there are different interpretations about what is unfolding inside these works. For example, in Robert Goold's Macbeth, these elements will influence how the audience understands what is taking place and the meaning of them. This occurs by watching the way the characters are reacting to each other and the words that are utilized to illustrate these ideas. Whereas, the Robert Frost poem, is leaving this open to interpretation and the experiences of the person. These contrasting factors will influence how they comprehend what is taking place and the meanings that are tied to them. ("Macbeth," 2013) (Frost, 1920)

What of the set direction and the dialogue?

The set direction in Macbeth is occurring through a more contemporary view. This is happening by having the characters dress and look like they are part of something which happened in the last 50 years. However, the dialogue is following the traditional script that was written by William Shakespeare in the 16th century. This is different from the Robert Frost poem, with these ideas being set in the time frame it was written and leaving it open to the interpretation of the person who is reading it. ("Macbeth," 2013) (Frost, 1920)

Some found the set direction distracting; some found it significantly enhanced the dialogue?
