Emotional Training

The business society in the modern day climate is presented with countless challenges as the traditional features evolve. Product quality is no longer the determinant of customer satisfaction, as salary is no longer the element to motivate and retain the employees. And the employees of today are essential. They are the most important organizational asset and this is true not only within service providing companies, but also among manufacturing and industry companies.

In order to succeed and attain its organizational objectives as such, the economic agents strive to motivate and train their employees. The training of the employees is a process often linked to intelligence and functional skills, whereas motivation integrates incentives more focused on creating satisfaction and commitment. Both of these sets of managerial decisions integrate a more salient part of emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence can be defined as "an ability or capacity to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one's self, and of others" (Institute for Health and Human Potential). Unlike the IQ, which is innate and cannot be modified throughout the life of the individual, emotional intelligence is asserted as evolutionary. In other words, employers can stimulate the emotional intelligence of their staff members and can then capitalize on the benefits generated.

Emotional intelligence is a relatively novel concept and firms are yet unsure of how to implement it. Nonetheless, without even realizing it, some employers are already stimulating the emotional intelligence of their employees. Our company for instance supports each employee in speaking their minds. The employers and the managers are open-minded and they listen to the inputs provided by the staff members. This effort increases the sense of trust revealed by the individuals and creates an environment in which free thinking is cherished. Aside from this however, the employer does not implement any specific program to stimulate emotional intelligence.

In a more professional setting, emotional intelligence could be stimulated through specific training programs, focused on the following:

The understanding of emotional intelligence at a deeper level

The cores of emotional intelligence, namely the development of abilities to identify, leverage, understand and manage emotions

The generation of an ability to connect emotions and messages received and to integrate them in the context of human interactions

The ability to leverage emotions, coupled with the development of skills to be used from emotional intelligence

The development of an emotional intelligence vocabulary

The development of the ability to understand and meet the emotional needs of others, or The ability to manage one's emotions in an efficient manner (American Management Association).

The implementation of such a plan to foster and develop emotional intelligence would have multifold benefits for both the employees as well as the employers. In other words, the measurements conducted at the end of the training programs, and after the lessons learnt are implemented, could materialize in several of the following positive outcomes:
