¶ … Personal Experience A Personal Conflict I have experienced in Life We all have experiences in life. While some of the experiences we encounter are quite exiting, some end up messing our lives. As a result, we learn (cognition) that the only way to live more fulfilling lives is to avoid those situations that could have contributed to our unhappiness. I have experienced such a situation. When I was young, I had the misfortune of being brought up by an uncaring and abusive father.

While my mother was a gracious and understanding lady, my father was the exact opposite of her. I remember he used to work at a nearby factory all day and when he came home late in the evening or at sometimes in the wee hours of the morning, he would ensure that he disrupted the peace that prevailed before his arrival. If on arrival he found us asleep, he would insist that we wake up and entertain him as he took his evening meal.

My mother bore the brunt of his cruelty and many are the times she would be humiliated and beaten up in our presence. Most of the time, she was beaten up and humiliated as she sought to protect us. I remember one particular incident when my mother became so fed up with his constant harassment that she decided to confront him. On that particular day, my father came home so drunk and as was the norm, he demanded that we wake up and entertain him as he took his dinner.

During such times, my dad would hurl abuses at me and my siblings telling us that we were not good enough and that he was not our dad. He at times called mum a whore in our presence. On this particular day, mum was so fed up with his behavior that she objected to our being woken up. I remember she was screaming and sobbing all over telling dad to just let us go live with our grandparents if he did not need us anymore.

She even offered to entertain him on our behalf. My dad on the other hand could hear none of it. That night, he beat mum up so badly that she had to spend three months in hospital. This particular event left me wrecked as I loved my mother so much and watching her writhe in pain was more than I could take. Throughout her marriage life, mum knew no happiness. I therefore concluded that marriage was at best a sham and to this day, I still subscribe to that view.

Then, I mostly kept to myself in school afraid of discussing the happenings at home with any of my few friends. I just wanted time to fly so fast so that I could grow up, get a job and live a lone happy life. I swore never to get married. Further, I always considered myself an outcast of sorts. While many children in school had good things to talk about their dads, I had none. During.
