¶ … Personal Statement
Like millions of other young people just starting out in the adult world in the United States, I too am in search of the American dream. I understand that most people are looking for the same thing I am and so I am not unique in that respect. Just about everyone has the goal of having a good home, a family, a decent job, and sufficient income so I can help my children get a good education and get them started on the right foot in this competitive world of business and economics.
At the present time I am a single male without a variety of work experiences. In fact I'm not shy about admitting that I recently worked at McDonald's for three years. I know that's not a very prestigious position, but in this time of economic recession, I know a lot of people who are out of work, who have lost jobs, who have had their homes foreclosed, and who are struggling.
So I was pleased that I had a decent job. On the job I learned the basic fundamentals of employment and responsibility. I was always on time and I was the guy who would stay late and clean up the restaurant if need be. I covered others' shifts when I was asked to. I also learned a lot about good public relations and customer service. When you work in a busy restaurant, with long lines of people impatient to be served, you need to use diplomacy, patience, kindness, and you have to be quick on your feet.
I was all of those persons that I just described, and while working at McDonald's, I often thought to myself, hey, this is not what you want to do for the rest of your life, so learn everything you can learn, save your money, and do the research to see what you will need to have in terms of education in order to reach your dream goal.
What are my goals and my dreams? First, I know in this high-tech society a person can't make much progress in any career without a good education. So my next immediate goal is to get into a community college (a two-year school), and begin taking general education classes to get my feet on the ground, then go from there into my preferred career option, learning to develop software for mobile applications. I want to design software for cell phones, or for iPads, or the Kindle, or any of the many technologies that are being manufactured today. There is a technological revolution going on in this country, and it has been going on since the advent of the Internet and personal computers.
But today, it excites me to think of the jobs that are going to be coming available as more and more companies get into developing and manufacturing mobile devices. Just a few years ago it seemed like a miracle that wireless technology was beginning to emerge. Having a phone to carry around and use instead of stepping into a germ-laden telephone booth was amazing to everyone then. But look where that technology has come since then!
