Personal Statement

As I was growing up, my mother used to tell me, "in the final analysis, what will be most important is how you impacted on the lives of others." I can't think of any other profession that gives an individual an opportunity to significantly impact positively on the lives of others as nursing does. Personally, I strongly believe that an individual does not derive the greatest satisfaction from the perks that come with a particular job. Our greatest satisfaction comes from the difference we make in the lives of others. There is nothing more satisfying than putting a smile on someone's face or lighting up someone's world. I love helping. Given that nursing is largely a helping profession, my desire to be a nurse hence comes naturally. I would also say that the environment in which I was brought up played a key role in the enhancement of my desire to become a nurse. Both of my parents as well as grandparents worked in the medical field.

To tell you a little bit about myself, I was born and brought up in Russia in a small town called Chita. Soon after completing my high school education, I was accepted at Ural State Pedagogical University, Yekaterinburg, where I qualified as a Biology Teacher. Realizing I still had some time to spare, I chose to further enhance my knowledge by enrolling for a B.A. In Public Relations at the Institute of International Relations, Yekaterinburg. At the time, I was in my third year at Ural State Pedagogical University and hence the two courses had to run concurrently. Upon completing my studies at both institutions, I moved to the U.S. At first, things were a little bit challenging as I had little knowledge of the English language. It was while working at Home Depot, New Milford - CT, that I sought to master the English language in an attempt to enhance my skills in the same. All the while, my desire to be a nurse kept burning. I had the option of looking for a job in teaching or in public relations, but I chose to pursue nursing instead. I thus enrolled for an Associate of Science in Nursing at Naugatuck Valley Community College, Waterbury, CT.

I believe that I do have what it takes to succeed in this challenging but exciting profession. As I have already pointed out elsewhere in this text, while growing up, I had the opportunity of interacting with various health professionals, amongst them nurses. From these interactions, I became aware that the profession does have its challenges. I am hence under no illusion whatsoever that nursing calls for sacrifice. I am ready to sacrifice so as to enhance the well-being of those who need my care the most i.e. patients. My working at the Home Depot Store also played a critical role in the enhancement of my personality in terms of my ability to relate well with others. It is also during this time that I further sharpened my problem solving skills. Thus given an opportunity, I will be able to relate well with patients and their families while also handling problems appropriately. I am also convinced that my personality resonates well with nursing. My caring attitude, excellent interpersonal skills as well as ability to work under pressure make me an ideal candidate for a position in your institution. I plan to further enhance my nursing skills by enrolling for a Master of Science in Nursing. This will also broaden my perspective of nursing.
