Pursuing a dental hygiene career to serve underserved communities

Personal Statement for Admission:

In the past few years, I have become more aware of the difficulties and trying moments that people face in today's society. During this period, I have also recognized the progress and successes made to help alleviate some of these difficulties, especially in the field of technology, communication, and medicine. Notably, I have placed much of my focus on the medical field because most of these difficulties are associated with health problems. As a result of my observations and findings, I have developed a huge desire to enter the medical field and participate in the process of resolving the numerous health challenges.

The desire to contribute positively to the society has in turn inspired me to seek for a degree in dental hygiene. I intend to successfully complete the dental hygiene program and further my career as a dental hygienist. After completion of the dental hygiene program, I would like work at a healthcare facility and community where my knowledge, skills, and abilities would be utilized to meet the need of populations. I would prefer working with a healthcare team that would help me acquire invaluable experience to promote my career growth and development. Moreover, I would like to serve in an underserved population where my services would be readily available as I further my career.

My desire to enroll for the dental hygiene program has also been influenced by my background and the environment I was brought up in. Despite always longing to be in this profession, I grew up in an environment that played a crucial role in enhancing this desire. I have been brought up with my parents who were both working in the field of medicine. This provided me with an opportunity to interact with the medical profession, especially with professional oral health care professionals. Actually, my parents have always encouraged me to interact with these professional, through which I have observed several procedures in dental care.

Through the observation of a wide range of procedures, I have obtained a deep appreciation and understanding of the needs of dental care patients. Moreover, I have also developed tremendous respect and high regard for oral health care professionals because of the roles they play in having a positive and supportive impact on the lives of these patients. I feel that being a dental hygienist will provide me with a platform to contribute positively to the community and earn respect just like the oral health care professionals.

The other major factor that has influenced my decision to pursue a dental hygiene program is the fact that I have always been interested in science. The interest in science has made me to pursue and obtain a bachelor's degree in Biology from Russia. Upon graduating, I came to the United States about 3 years ago and immediately enrolled for classes at a community college, though I barely knew any English. I decided to undertake the classes because of the need to improve the grades for my prerequisite courses i.e. A. I seek to attain the grades for my prerequisite courses because I believe that a dental hygienist must possess the abilities to be a skilled doctor and effective communicator. Therefore, classes at the community college will help me acquire essential skills as I prepare for the degree program.
