Personal Statement
From my family history to my extensive education to my work experience, my academic interests and relevant experience have prepared me for the UCL program in construction, economics, and management. I intend to pursue this program because of my academic interest in engineering, an interest that was cultivated through my youth. Growing up in Turkey, my family was in the field of construction. Having observed the construction industry for quite some time, then, I decided to tune my academic interests to its foundations. Thus, I chose to obtain a COE major at Brown University, where I am currently in my fourth year. The CEO major, which is one of the most involved offered at the university, combines the fields of commerce, organizations, and entrepreneurship. As this major is a combination of engineering, sociology, and economics courses, my course of study has furthered my interest in engineering, as well as its practical application through business. Through the unique coursework, I have learned major concepts related to engineering, which I intend to elaborate upon at UCL. In addition, I have cultivated a unique appreciation for the role of economics and commerce in the industry of construction and engineering. Furthermore, my sociology classes allowed me to comprehend and consider the human variable in engineering, construction, and business endeavors. In addition, with the thorough knowledge many of macro and microeconomic principles that Brown University's economics classes instilled in me, I will bring a unique and interesting viewpoint UCL's Construction Economics and Management program. I will be able to contribute to classroom discussion and collaberation, bringing the unique view that the synthesis of instruction that I received at Brown University, and the subsequent academic interests and questions that came about as a result of that synthesis. Also, my background will allow for a unique viewpoint, as I was raised in Turkey and am fluent in French and English. My academic successes and leadership roles include serving as president of the honor board in my Turkish high school, while also representing the students on the school's disciplinary committee. Thus, my academic interests are founded in the industries if engineering and construction, while also focusing on the importance of economics, commerce, and sociology in these areas.
