Personality and Interest: Impact on Job Choice and Location

There are many considerations one must ponder when considering a new job or a move to a new company. Many people assume that the primary reasons one would change jobs or companies include increased money and advancement opportunities. While financial incentives and promotion are often key considerations, they are often not the primary reason may people change jobs or move. Many other factors determine one's motives.

On of the primary alternative motives one may have for moving is their perceived quality of work life or work life balance opportunities. They may seek another job for example if they feel another company would afford them a more flexible work schedule, say to accommodate their personal goals or family needs. Others may seek a new job that provides a higher quality work atmosphere, one that embraces diversity or personal expression. Still others may prefer to work in a smaller and more intimate work environment thus move from a large to a small company and vice versa.

Other reasons people may move include their comfort level with their line of work and their employer. It is important that individuals are comfortable in the line of work they have chosen. Sometimes through the course of employment people find they would prefer to work in another area, thus they move to a company that will provide them this opportunity or change jobs. Still others may find they are more comfortable with the work atmosphere and policies another company has to offer. Other reasons for moving may include decreased commute times or telecommuting opportunities presented at another company or in another job. As we can see, there are multiple reasons one may consider looking for a new job or moving to another company. Personality and interest are key considerations.
