Many are unaware that there is a big difference between the names narcissism and ordinary selfishness which have a lot to do with personality disorders. That article talks about how in the American culture today, mental distress is a big deal. The author also add that personality disorders are another issue that people are dealing with today. Each appear to have leaked from the offices of psychiatrists into the general talks. The author made a good point that people usually think of themselves in labels. For example, rather than being sad, a lot of times people are depressed. Rather than being orderly, people are just OCD. Rather than being energetic and active, even the children of families appear to be ADHD. The author then hits the main topic which is about "Am I a narcissist? Am I a borderline?" The article mentions that many are starting to question that everyday words are turning out to be part of people's everyday vocabulary and are as unescapable as the word "neurotic" in a preceding era.

The article gives an example of a young mother named Elise. The article then article talks about how she thought herself to be selfish. She thought this because she wanted to take time for herself away from her children. Elise thought that she was a narccisst borderline. The psychologist had to explained to her that narcissism and other characterological conditions are shaped early in life as an outcome of a mother who emotional needs were not met by their mother as a child. However, the therapist asked her about her mother. She wanted to know if there was some kind of neglect in Elise background. Was she abusive or unresponsive? She found out that her mother was none of those things. Elise proclaimed that her mother was the type of woman that stayed home with her and the other kids all through her childhood. She also added that she did not feel as though she was neglected from as far as she could remember. "I felt like she was always there for me. She never said a harsh word to me as far as I can remember"

Upon the examination, it was very unlikely that she was a narcissist or a borderline. From this article, it explained how a person can think that they are something that they are not. It was explained to her that the disorder is different from ordinary, garden-variety selfishness. The article makes the point that everyone is selfish once in a while. The article makes the point that it is really natural for humans to feel this way. However, narcissism according to the article is a personality disorder is something all the way different. To start with, it is a pervasive incapability to truly love or have understanding for anyone separately from oneself. All of these traits come from being emotionally hurt in early childhood. The article makes the point it is hard and people impossible -- for a counselor to treat this problem.

The article takes on the topic of suicide among teenage girls that have some kind of personality disorder. It makes the point that there is a lot going on with them that people are fully unaware of. The author talks about how middle school years are not by any means easy for kids. However, it goes in deeper to explain that it is no walk in the park for girls either. It appears that nowadays, girls having a very hard time in middle school. The article paints the picture that suicide rate for girls ages around the ages of 10 to 14 has been going up an enormous 76% in 2004, according to the newest statistics obtainable from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Zimmer, 2009). The author goes on to share that girls among the ages of 15 and 18, had a rate that went up beyond 30%.

The writer explained that some psychologist believes that even though the increase is not good and kind of scare, it could be just a random fluctuation. Nevertheless, child and teenage therapist are the ones reporting that the prevalence of self-harming behaviors -- like cutting and burning due to personality disorders. However, the point the article is trying to get to is that it is on the rise. The writer also explains that girls today are subjected to impractical pressures from the media and society, and their once-private identity tussles are now civic, because of the internet. The article goes on to clarify that girls are still socialized to be nurturing caregivers but are now stressed to outshine scholastically and athletically just like the boys. They are expected to do this while staying sexy, thin, sexy, and good-looking.
