Pharmacogenomics Epigenetics Personalized Medicine Treatment

Last reviewed: March 6, 2022 ~2 min read
Abstract

This essay examines the integration of pharmacogenomics and epigenetics in developing personalized treatment approaches for patients. The analysis focuses on how genetic testing can predict medication responses, particularly with statins, and reduce adverse effects. The paper advocates for moving beyond symptom-based treatment to incorporate genetic analysis for more effective, individualized patient care.

By looking at the medications that can be most effective, the writer denotes that we can avoid the adverse effects of statins if we predetermine their impact on the patients (Arrigoni et al., ). Pharmacogenomic focuses on how human bodies react to medications, while epigenetics assists us in understanding the changes genes undergo as we grow and how the genes are transferred from one generation to another. Therefore, we can better understand the hereditary conditions and impact of certain lifestyles on us and future generations. Since we can transfer genes from one generation to another, it becomes vital we ensure we take care of ourselves now and in the future for the sake of other generations.

Some medications can effectively treat one patient and fail to treat another patient. Human genes differ, and when we understand how a medication can fail in one patient treat another, we can formulate alternative treatment methods. Treatment focuses on the patients’ symptoms, and we prescribe medications based on these symptoms. We end up with some patients receiving benefits from the medications while others don’t. Therefore, we need to change how we treat patients and incorporate additional methods of checking their genes. When genes are included, practitioners can better understand and use a personalized approach for treating patients.
