Pitch I think, in advance of World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, that we should run a story or two profiling some of the perils that journalists face in the course of their duties. We all know that in many parts ot the world, journalists have no freedom, and the result is that the populations in those places do not have access to good information. People who receive information from government-controlled or otherwise biased sources simple do not receive good quality information, to their detriment. So we know the value of what investigative journalists do. We also know that there are many who risk their lives to tell the stories that governments do not want heard. Such journalists are at the peak of our profession. Their stories strike to the heart about what a free and civilized society is. So I think that it is important to highlight this, especially considering that we live in a world where misinformation and vapid distractions are more prevalent than ever. We cannot complain about falling into irrelevancy when we ourselves do not take control over the narrative. We must remind people of why journalism is so important, and one way to do this is to highlight individual case studies of brave journalists who are facing exile for their work.

One such journalist is Nazila Fathi. She wrote extensively about prostitution in Iran, highlighting the plight of vulnerable women in that society. Because she wrote about how much worse their situation has become...

This takes her far from her subject matter, but it is a matter of survival. The narrative is compelling, for several reasons. First, it highlights senseless oppression of a male-dominated religious government targeting the poorest, most vulnerable women and making a pariah out of their champion.
The story also highlights the role that the press plays. Without Fathi, there is nobody left in Iran to tell these women's stories. Fathi has shined a light on the activities of the Iranian government, holding them to account for their hypocrisy and misogyny. Fathi lives in the U.S. now, and this allows her to write from afar on these issues, for such outlets as the New York Times.. Her availability also makes her a good story, because she can contribute valuable narrative and firsthand information, whereas many others in her situation may not be as available or willing to do this. An interview with her can likely be secured.

Fathi also has some name brand recognition. In addition to writing for the Times, she has published a book, The Lonely War, which chronicles her experiences and those of underprivileged women in Iran. Furthermore, there are several other articles about her, including interviews, available online in order to provide some base material that can be used to help build the interview with her. As a journalist,…

" It should be noted that Perriello supported a "Republican version" (House.gov) of PAYGO that supported stronger restrictions on spending. In defense of this vote, he says, "This was a great chance to really get our budget under control, and I was glad to stand up and vote for the kind of smart fiscal policy that folks in the Fifth District expect" (Perriello qtd. On House.gov). Perriello even posted an

Intelligence When most people think the concept of "intelligence," they think of how "smart" an individual might be. Typically associated with academic success, many imagine that intelligence has a lot to do with how well one did (or did not do) in school, and later, by how much money one can make in its exercise. However, as many people know, there are many different kinds of intelligence -- from the "book

International Regulation of Tourism in Antarctica Since the mid-1980s, Antarctica has been an increasingly popular tourist destination, despite the relative danger of visiting the largest, least explored -- and arguably least understood -- continent on earth. Beginning with the 1959 treaty establishing Antarctica as an international zone free of claims of sovereignty by nation's that had been instrumental in establishing research stations there, there has been almost constant negotiation about how

Pictures on the news of American flags being burned seem to appear more often than they used to. Perhaps my generation just isn't used to having our nation criticized to the extent that it has been since our response to September 11; we all know there have been anti-American protests in the past, that flags have been burned and protests against certain American military endeavors waged. Anti-Americanism has many definitions
