Planned a Driving Trip to Another State

¶ … planned a driving trip to another state or across the country? How did you begin that plan? Did you start with your destination in mind, consider what time you wanted to make it to that point, then plan your entire trip around that deadline? Did you consider how your trip companions like to travel, or did you simply push forward with what you wanted to do? Did you make a contingency plan in case you ran into difficulty along the way? How important was it to consider interesting sites along the way or your need to rest if you got tired? Your dissertation plan should contain some of the same elements that a well-planned road trip would entail.

In this Discussion you develop a concrete plan to begin your dissertation. While plans are living documents that adapt and change, the ability to see the process laid out before you in black and white can have an impact on your ability to make progress. When developing your plan, be specific. Think about when and how you will collect your research, analyze it, and write. Consider the amount of reading that you need for your literature review and the amount of reading required to fully understand your method.

Also consider the commitments in your life. Do you work full time, have a life partner, children, older parents? Remember that the rest of the world is not committed to the completion of your dissertation -- t his is your personal, and in many ways, very selfish goal. You will have to be selfish to complete your dissertation. Consider major milestones in this process and celebrate each of them along the way. Finally, keep that plan nearby and use it to measure your progress to keep you on track.
