Start a Neighborhood Watch Program

A neighborhood watch program can be set up with some effort and participation through willing neighbors in your community to prevent and discourage crime in the future. These committees have been successful for many years, and they are supported by local law enforcement and other town officials who focus him on crime prevention as a priority to better protect civilians and their homes and businesses. By a communities working with a variety of certified individuals, including their local police and sheriff's department, the members of the community can enforce laws and discourage burglaries, mischievous activities, theft, and other crimes that can be prevented by coming together and creating a plan.

The first part of the plan would be to contact your police or sheriff's department and speak directly to the officer(s) who work in the crime prevention unit and explain your interest and goals of the community so they can best assist you in setting up a meeting. The officer will be able to give you some helpful information on what their department provides, what they may expect from you and other participants, and help arrange a time that is appropriate for the officer and others to attend that can get the attention of the vicinity. By having representatives attend the meeting they can help your neighborhood and surrounding areas create an official Neighborhood Watch Program, and they can speak at the committee to let the people who live in the area know the background of the program and its statistics and success rates. Officers can help organize the program to get it started because there are several responsibilities that will need to be carried out that they can explain. With the assistance of town officials and police and/or sheriff department, the neighborhood can be successful in crime prevention, and the families will know you are serious about keeping crimes from happening and cleaning up the neighborhood.

Advertising and choosing a good place to meet is very important, and the people in the area need to be notified at least 10 to 14 days in advance so they can make arrangements to be there because it will be important to anyone who wants a change for the better. Ask friends and family to assist you in creating some flyers to post throughout the neighborhood and at other local public places where they will be sure to see your announcement. When deciding on a place to meet, think about how many people may attend to decide whether or not to me at a community center, church, school, recreational park or center, or a well-known place that is close by and provides plenty of room for everyone. Word-of-mouth is the best way to get people interested in the program, and with it being a positive and preventive program that people will share the news.
