¶ … Business Administration/Concentration: Hospitality Management

Can tourism reduce poverty? This is the question I pose for a research project. It is relevant to the hospitality industry because tourist destinations depend upon the hospitality industry in order to survive and draw business. Governments of developing nations can promote tourism in order to reduce poverty, if the findings of this study produce affirmative results. If, on the other hand, they do not show that tourism can reduce poverty, the question of how to reduce poverty can be examined from a different angle. The purpose of this topic is to provide a literature assessment of the relationship between tourism, hospitality and poverty reduction in various countries around the world so as to draw out themes and concepts that can help students and researchers to better understand the relationship.

My hypothesis is that hospitality can help tourism to reduce poverty around the world. Warm hospitality is a common sense way to attract visitors to places where they have never been but may like to go. If the hospitality industry in destination places can harness a populace's energy and potential to provide service to visitors, the inflow of profits to that country could alleviate symptoms and effects that plague impoverished nations. The key to this study would be to examine how hospitality, tourism and poverty are related so as to arrive at a better assessment of the interaction.

A famous person whom I consider to be an example of creative talent in the field of hospitality management is Steve Jobs. While Jobs is not known as being one of the most pleasant people to be around, from a business standpoint, his hospitality management sense was superior. Jobs understood the importance of making a great first impression, so everything he did was geared towards delivering this all-important effect. When he held conferences in order to show off the latest developments in Apple technology, he invited press, journalists, students, users of Apple tech, fan boys, and all sorts of types to take part in the demonstration. He employed an excellent theatrical sense and appreciated the fine art of putting on a display. He may have been a micro-manager in many ways, but part of his genius was that he was able to see exactly what he wanted and what was needed down to the tiniest, microscopic hair. He strived for perfection and quite often delivered this, thus catapulting Apple and the company's products to the top of the tech world.
