Forget not Yet the Tried Intent -- poem analysis

Sir Thomas Wyat's poem "Forget not Yet the Tried Intent" is written in the form of five quatrains and it has a rhyming tercet with the fourth verse of each stanza being repeated as a refrain throughout the poem. The poet apparently uses this poem with the purpose of having audiences acknowledge his efforts to address topics such as truth and the meaning of life. He proceeds with claiming that he is solely responsible for his struggle to reach a conclusion that would benefit the world as a whole and thus attempts to influence audiences to respect his efforts and his persona in general.

The second stanza calls for audiences to experience a rediscovery process in which they can become better acquainted with the world and its values. Moreover, the poet wants his listeners to understand that life has become a formal concept in which "the suit, the service" dominate people's lives without anyone being able to tell where these concepts originate from and why they continue to play an important role in society as a whole. The poet wanted to emphasize that even with the fact that there is no rational explanation behind a series of ideas that the social order promotes, people continue to support these respective concepts and blindly follow rules that they practically know nothing about. The fact that he relates to this life of courtship and service as being "tired" is probably meant to stand as evidence with regard to how the poet wants the world to experience a reawakening while also clinging on to some of its most important values.

The third stanza is a call for audiences to refrain from employing an ignorant attitude concerning the past. People are encouraged to remember that great injustices occurred throughout time. Moreover, the pain of waiting is brought forward in order to signal the damage that it causes and the fact that it can have a horrible effect on people's minds. The twelfth verse is meant to bring further drama to the general feeling that the poem is meant to put across as the narrator is starting to describe more and more negative concepts.
