¶ … oneself through poetry can often prove to be a difficult task, and may be even harder to interpret. In this paper, the writer is able to successfully by creating a general theme of personal growth, transformation, and the confusion that may accompany this change. The writer is able to successfully and clearly explain why he chose the poets and the poems he chose, and clearly demonstrates their influence on the new poem.
The poem created by the author tells a story through his three poet inspirations. In the explanation, the writer states that he used Langston Hughes' "Theme for English B" to help establish the tone and pace of the inspired poem. The writer also states that he used Hughes' poem to develop a theme, which helped the writer to establish parameters. Because the writer successfully established a theme and gave an explanation of his reasoning, and provided a concrete example, I was able to see how he was able to connect with Hughes and how he was inspired by "Theme for English B."
The writer was also influenced by Whitman's "Song of Myself X," which he uses to maintain and develop the theme he established in the first part of the poem. He then proceeds to explain the how "Song of Myself X" inspired him and detail exactly how he was inspired. He then reinforces the how Whitman's quote builds upon Hughes' quote. The writer also establishes that Whitman also helped to inspire the rhyme and rhythm scheme, which gives the writer's poem structure.
The third poem the writer chose was Neruda's "We Are Many." He proceeds to explain why this poem was chosen, what difficulties he had with the poet and the poem, and establish how it influenced his poem. I believe that choosing a poet the writer struggled with, he is able to translate his personal struggle of understanding to the subject of the poem, which helps to make it more personal.
