The work of police officers spans a broad range of activities. It involves working with communities and undertaking activities to detect crime, prevent it and prosecute offenders. A police officer needs to have integrity, be flexible, honest and determined. One also needs to be physically fit in order to deal with the daily challenges of the job. Communication skills and the ability to take initiative to employ practical solutions to the daily challenges is an essential quality too (wiltshire police, 2016). Ranking of police officers takes into account factors such as age, experience and physical fitness and the primary determiners.
The Age factor: 25 years is the preferred age for new police recruits. It is assumed that once one is 25 years of age, they are able to communicate effectively and solve problems as they emerge.
Experience: if one has had experience, preferably in a security position, they stand a good chance of consideration.
Physical fitness: Endurance is a necessary requirement in police work. There is a one-mile run test to ascertain one's physicality. If one completes the race in less than 7.3 minutes, they demonstrate acceptable physicality levels. On the other hand, if one runs the race in over the stated time frame, they are ranked lower. Therefore, given the above requirements, I will rate the applicants as follows:
No. 1. Johnson Stephanie K
She is 27 years old. Therefore, she meets the requisite threshold of 25. She has been deployed in police duties for three years in the past. Although she is married, she does not have children yet. Therefore, she's not too preoccupied and can attend police duty. She clocks within the recommended run time of 7.3 minutes. She is ranked first because she consistently scores high in the three primary areas for police recruitment consideration.
No.2: Davis Raymond A
He is aged 25. That is the threshold age. He possesses impressive theoretical knowledge of law enforcement. Such a quality does not translate to experience but it is a channel for the introduction of new ideas, methods and techniques to the force. He has worked in a responsible position in his family farm; a responsibility that suggests that he was assigned such a role to protect what is important. Although Raymond's run-time is not impressive, he can improve on it.
No.3: Reid Jennifer L.
This applicant is highly interesting and promising too. She is ranked 3 only because she is 23 years. If the age factor were not to be included, she would be the best applicant. Since she is only 23 years, she may not be sufficiently prepared to solve problems that she may encounter in her line of duty. My assessment could be wrong though. She has theoretical and practical experience in law enforcement. She also had the best time in the one-mile-run test. In summary, Reid is an amazing applicant with plenty of promise for the police service.
No.4: Duke, Brent L
He has a great education and is aged 33. His education level is highly valued and required in law enforcement. Yet, he fits in more as a police psychologist than a regular officer. His vast experience in law enforcement provides him with a clear advantage in profiling and integrating cases. His physical fitness is not at par with others, since he scores one of the lowest run times in the one-mile run test.
No.5: Moore, Robert J
More has over 13 years experience in law enforcement activities. He is aged 31 years and is physically fit. He makes a good fit for police service.
No. 6 Gonzalez, Ruben J
Gonzalez has 4 years experience in law enforcement. He took the longest time in the mile race. Generally, they are good applicants. The score on the written test is a key indicator in the ranking. However, the score is only a control quantity and may not necessarily reflect their actual performance on the job.
