¶ … political policy of interest and summarize that policy while contrasting it with my own position. In order to do this I have chosen Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California and her position on the legality of abortion. Before contrasting Ms. Pelosi's comments with my own I will give background information about this policy and how it affects the citizens of our country.

Roe v Wade was the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal and women had a constitutional right to this practice. The decision was based on protecting the personal privacy of the pregnant woman and took their power from the 9th and 14th amendments of the Constitution. The court deemed that a fetus is not a person but merely a potential for life and therefore disqualifies that organism from having any rights of its own. There is some leeway within this law giving more potential rights to the potential life as the mother progresses on in her pregnancy.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the powerful female Democratic congresswoman from California fully supports Roe v Wade and all the Pro-abortion idealism that surrounds the debate around this issue. Her website posted a celebration note on the 38th anniversary of Roe V Wade. The statement read: " On Saturday, as we commemorate the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting a woman's right to make her own reproductive health care decisions. As I have throughout my time in Congress, I will fight in the 112th Congress to ensure a woman's right to choose and oppose threats to Roe v. Wade that would depart from the status quo of no taxpayer funding for abortions, and threaten women's reproductive rights. "

The abortion argument is not easy to talk about because of the excited levels at which it has always been discussed. There appears to be a fervent atmosphere around this discussion and emotions tend to get in the way from real and meaningful intellectual discussion that could lead to reasonable consensus that would move the country forward on this issue. Abortion is also commonly referred to as a woman's issues and being a woman myself makes me feel more tied to this issue than if I were a man.
