Policy Elements

The program supporting free speech by the ACLU has the mission of preserving free speech due to its inclusion in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. The contributions it can make are boundless, from supporting a student's right to free speech off (and on) school property, to the freedom to print and publish materials online and in publications. Free speech is a core right of freedom and democracy, and supporting it supports those ideals as well.

Benefits all center on the nation's people and their right to express themselves. This can include controversial behavior, such as burning the flag. While free speech may not condone the actions, it certainly condones the ability to express them in a free republic. Every citizen and resident of the nation is entitled to free speech, and this policy supports that right that came with the Bill of Rights. Their continued struggle with the Supreme Court and lower courts across the nation ensures that the right to free speech is not abandoned or diluted.

The administrative structure for the ACLU is broad because the organization is active across the nation, with chapters in every state. They also represent the citizens of the nation, so their membership is broad; even if a person is not a "card carrying" member of the ACLU, they still represent their rights. Accordingly, much of the structure is made up of legal professionals, as much of the work they do takes place in the courts.
