¶ … Environmental Concerns

The environment that I have selected to analyze for this particular assignment through some of the pivotal tenets of Michael Porter is that which constitutes the corporate world. Specifically, the environment pertains to information technology -- which has been called various names throughout its past and present existence -- and its propagation through what is largely a corporate environment . In fact, when one chooses to examine the past of the corporate environment of information technology, it becomes apparent that there are certain similarities and certain differences found within this environment as it relates to its present and future. More than 20 years ago the IT environment was not as greatly impacted by globalization as it is today. Although globalization arguably began in earnest during the late 1960's and became a reality in the 1970's, in the early part of the 1990's its ramifications on the corporate IT environment are not nearly as palpable as they are in contemporary times. 20 years ago the scope of this environment was still largely focused in certain parts of Silicon Valley and in California in general.

There was a marked dearth of multinational corporations in this particular field, particularly when compared to the amount that existed in other industries such as the automotive industry. Porter chooses to describe vertical industries in a five point stratification system that includes those that relate to the fragmented, emerging, mature, declining, and global (Business, 2015). Although IT is an example of a global vertical industry, it was partly affected by other environments such as the mature automotive industry, since the globalization tendencies of the latter would eventually influence those of the former.

Today, the corporate IT environment is probably more globalized than other environments in which business is conducted, except for various facets of the manufacturing industry. Multinational corporations are fairly normal within this environment, as the prevalence of cloud computing and international regulations pertaining to the storage and accessing of data indicate (Thielman, 2015). The management of data and of the information technology that makes such management possible is certainly considered within a definite global context that not only includes international conferences, but international supply chains and other realities of globalization. As such, it is fairly clear that the most eminent factor affecting this environment today is globalization and the inexorable shrinking of the globe through increased technology that makes communication and accessing resources internationally easier than it ever has been.

The future of the global corporate environment involves both expansion and a decreasing of the parameters of this environment. Not surprisingly, such a future certainly pertains to globalization and its effects on the corporate world. In terms of expansion, it is fairly evident that developments in this environment are allowing it to encompass much more than a simple office building or, as is the case with multinational companies, different locations throughout the globe. Various mobile technologies and increase measures for security and governance are creating a situation in which employees can regularly work remotely via any variety of satellite locations -- including home.
