Reaction Paper: The Power Code

Section I: Insight

A key insight from The Power Code by Kay and Shipman (2023) is the redefinition of power, particularly as it relates to women. The authors argue that traditional views of power tend to be rooted in dominance and ego but that these actually often limit both personal and organizational growth. They propose a new approach that centers around collaboration, authenticity, and empathy, calling for \\\\\\\"power with\\\\\\\" rather than \\\\\\\"power over.\\\\\\\" Objectively, the book critiques the old model of power, which focuses on hierarchy and control, and suggests that true power can only be achieved through fostering connections and understanding and spreading joy. Subjectively, this insight struck me as interesting because it is the opposite of what I have always associated with power. It made me reflect on moments where I have seen power exercised through ego, often leading to conflict. The emphasis on empathy and joyful connections resonates with my feeling that power should indeed serve to uplift.

Section II: Linkages

This perspective on power connects to a personal experience I had regarding emotional intelligence and servant leadership. Just as Kay and Shipman (2023) argue for a power model built on empathy and collaboration, my experience showed me that effective leaders are effective because of their ability to connect and inspire. I also see parallels with a TED Talk by Brené Brown on vulnerability in leadership, which aligns with the authors’ call to dismantle ego-driven power structures. In both cases, there is a focus on authenticity, joy and mutual respect.
