¶ … President of the World

Hunger, war, poverty, human rights abuses, incurable diseases, climate change, drug abuse (most particularly amongst the youth) just to name but a few are some of the real problems we face as global citizens today. Each and every jurisdiction from Africa to America to Asia faces more or less similar problems and in my opinion, very little is being done both at the political and civil society front to tackle the underlying problem. In my view, we fail to tackle these global problems because we keep ducking real issues. What would I do differently if I were to be elected president of the world?

With a single government running the world, I am convinced that global issues would be addressed in a more efficient and all-inclusive manner. What if I were to be elected president in such an arrangement? If such an unlikely eventuality came to pass, I would simply establish four key pillars for a better world during my first 100 days in office. These key pillars would be financial literacy, health, democracy and respect for the rule of law. These are the key pillars I would entrench into the 'global constitution' to guarantee the well being of each and every global citizen.

In regard to financial literacy, I remain convinced that this is one of the most underrated pillars to human progress in the modern world. Many of our school going children are not being taught how to manage their finances. They therefore leave school already heavily in debt and squander most of the earnings they rake in when they eventually get employment. In that regard, they effectively end up messing not only their lives but those of future generations. If I were to become president of the world, I would make financial education mandatory at all levels of education. With this, more people would learn how to be financially independent and hence be able to effectively settle their health costs, utility expenses and other bills. With more people being able to take care of themselves other than expecting the government to take care of them through regular handouts, retirement packages etc.; the world government would be able to use its funds to pursue other important initiatives.

Secondly, if I were to be elected president of the world, I would ensure that about 50% of the revenue earned by the world government is injected into health enhancement initiatives. Such initiatives could be public awareness on healthy living, health research etc. In my opinion, a healthy globe is a productive globe. I am convinced that with sufficient funding, most of the world's diseases could be wiped out. Already, Bill Gates is making great strides in his quest to eliminate polio; and this is just from a single person's effort.

Next, if I were to be elected president of the world, I would do everything in my power to promote democracy. In this regard, I would ensure that all global citizens are accorded their right to equal say in all the issues that may in one way or the other affect their very lives. As president, I would ensure that I put an end to tyranny, dictatorship and political sycophancy.
