An integral part of criminal justice system, prisons has been used to confine prisoners for crimes and atrocities they have committed by violating law. Suspect is most likely to be confined in prison if the bail has not been posted while their trail is under progress. If the suspect has been proven to be guilty of committing the crime, then he or she would be confined in a prison. In United States, there are several prison systems, out of which penitentiary and federal prison camps would be discussed. This paper would seek to compare the Federal Prison Camp Yankton and Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility Florence in Colorado in the lights of broad and diverse academic resources.

Overview

As mentioned earlier, a prison is considered to be an institution that seeks to correct deviant behavior of the criminals and offenders. Furthermore, their personal freedom is restricted because of the crime they had committed as they have violated the law (Foster, 2006). During the nineteenth century, the first ever prisons that were established were the penitentiary prisons systems. Today, penitentiary administrative maximum facilities are used in United States at ensuring that prisoners go though strict regime, which aim disciplining them in order to ensure that they think and ponder on the criminal acts they had committed and by violating the law (Foster, 2006). On the other hand, federal prison camps have been founded and developed in order to confine the prisoners, where they are provided with facilities with flexible security in order to provide them safe and humane environment and where they work and get opportunities to develop their skills. In simple words, federal prison camps have been developed to train offenders to make positive contribution towards society.

Federal Prison Camp Yankton, South Dakota

The Federal Prison Camp of Yankton had been created and established in the year 1988. Found in the south-eastern part of South Dakota, the prison camp is located in Yankton. There is no doubt that this prison system is popular among criminal offenders as it is liberal institution, which minimum security (Langan & Farrington, 2008). The open environment of the prison has created a friendly atmosphere for prisoners, where they can learn and improve their skills in order to contribute positively towards society. Before becoming a prison camp, the building was an education institution. Security devices and fences are part of this camp. Some of the prisoners even go on jobs in order to allow them to positively interact with the community as a part of their sentence.

FPC Yankton is considered to be educational institution one room reform house. With its college campus building and open green grounds, the open environment allows prisoners or inmates to enjoy the atmosphere and at the same time, developing their skills to serve the community. The green grounds have green grass and landscaped plants and trees (Bosworth, 2002). The total land area of the camp is about thirty three acres and it is part of Horticulture program, where education is provided to prisoners. Educational services have been provided to inmates in order to enhance and develop their skills, which are located on the second floor of the building. Educating the prisoners at FPC is of great importance as it is part of mandatory requirement defined by the Bureau of Prisons.

Inmates, who are high school dropouts, start off at basic level. They are taught basic mathematic skills, English and other subjects in order to ensure that they earn their high school diploma. At the same time, inmates are often taught to read and write. Furthermore, as soon as the inmates have earned their diploma, they become part of the teaching staff in order to teach other inmates. At FPC Yankton, each and every inmate has a job. Some of them work in libraries and some provide assistance to tutors. Other services provided by the prison that concentrates on developing skills of inmates include electrical services, food services, farming along with workshops on carpentry and plumbing (Foster, 2006). At FPC, inmates take part in educational and technical programs in order to positively contribute towards the society. The greenhouse work is also part of FPC program and thus, it has trained the inmates to take part in garden works and green house works.

ADX have founded as a result of criminal offense that took place. In the year 1983, Thomas Silverstein was being taken to Penitentiary Prison located in Marion. Silverstein had murdered his escorting officers. The tactic used to kill the officer concentrated on the convict to walk to the hall and to turn to a side (Langan & Farrington, 2008).
After turning the side, the convict approached to the specific prison cell in order to get assistance from the accomplice, who would unlock the handcuffs. The key had been stolen and given to the convict. He was also provided with a knife by his accomplice, which was used to kill the escorting officer. Because of this reason, the Marion prison had been shut down. For this purpose, ADX Florence was built in order to house the most dangerous criminals. The total area on where the prison is about 37 acre and it has more than 450 bed complexes (Foster, 2006). Each of the houses has six different security levels. The furniture of each cell is made from concrete. Each cell has a bed and desk. It also contains a toilet and a shower, with a timer. The dimensions for the windows are 4-inch by 4 feet, which prevents the inmate to recognize his area. Communication facility is not available and food is mainly delivered by officers. The whole prison has security cameras, laser beams, guard and attack dogs and motion detectors. The boundary walls contain razor sharp fences.

Conclusion

A prison is considered to be an institution where offenders and criminals are confined in a space and where there personal freedom is restricted. Federal prison camps have been founded and developed in order to confine the prisoners, where they are provided with facilities with flexible security in order to provide them safe and humane environment and where they work and get opportunities to develop their skills. In simple words, federal prison camps have been developed to train offenders to make positive contribution towards society. The Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility, which is commonly known as ADX, is considered to be strict prison for men. Its unofficial name is ADX and it is considered to be one of the strictest prison systems found in the United States. Furthermore, ADX concentrates on housing one of the most dangerous criminals and therefore, it is highly secure.
