¶ … private school is a much better choice for students than public school. In this paper, I will outline some of the pros and cons: cost, student to teacher ratio and discipline.
On the positive end, while it is cheaper to send a child to public school than to private, the cost of educating your child may actually be less. In a report from the Cato Institute it is reported that the average private elementary school tuition in America is less than $2,500. The same report states that the cost to educate one pupil in a public school runs around $6,857 per year. Private schools are able to be more selective about the students they enroll, and this means that teachers are able to spend more time teaching and less time disciplining children. Private school means that the student will have a better educational experience. Private schools are better in that they have certain rules and expectations regarding how students dress and behave, and more importantly, they have the ability to enforce them.
On the negative side, most families cannot send a child to private school these days. In these hard economic times, it is difficult for a family to afford food, and private education may be a luxury some families have to live without. The education offered through private school is generally better, but it also depends on what the student does with that education. As reported in the Times Online, students with special needs like dyslexia often cannot get the special education they require in private schools. Private schools also do not have to give students testing like is required in public schools, so children may or may not be getting a better education -- there is no way to compare. Certain rules and regulations in private schools may make it difficult for kids to follow, and therefore they do not do as well in private schools but are more able to express themselves in the environment of a public school. Public schools also by law must be standardized in their provision of programs and services, and private schools are not.
Private and public schools both have their own benefits and problems. I still feel that when you take into account the fact that the price is reasonable, the education more focused and the teacher attention more individual, it is important that whenever possible, children be allowed to attend a private school.
